Untersuchungen zur Verbesserung des praktischen Einsatzes von Anionenrationen zur sicheren und wirkungsvollen Prophylaxe der Hypokalzämie auf Herdenebene | Investigation for the improvement of the practical use of anionic rations for a safe and effective prophylaxis of hypocalcemia on herd level

Ziel dieser Arbeit war die Optimierung von Konzepten zum effizienten Einsatz anionischer Salze mit sicherer prophylaktischer Wirkung bei Minimierung der Nebenwirkungen. Zu diesem Zweck wurde eine Beobachtungsstudie auf einem kommerziellen Milchviehbetrieb (1700 Holstein-Frisian-Milchkühe, Jahresdurchschnittsleistung ca. 11.000 kg Milch, 3,83 % Fett und 3,33 % Eiweiß) durchgeführt. Um die Effekte der Fütterung anionischer Salze auf die Fütterung, den Metabolismus und den Gesundheitsstatus der Kühe zu analysieren, wurde die Anionenration mit einer kalziumreduzierten Vorbereitungsfütterung verglichen. Der Einsatz der anionischen Salze wurde über ein ¾ Jahr mittels eines Probenplans begleitet (Ziel: DCAB um 0 mEq/kg TS, Kalziumgehalt 9-14 g/kg TS). Danach stellte der Betrieb die Fütterung von der Anionenration auf eine kalziumreduzierte Vorbereitungsfütterung um (Ziel: DCAB zwischen +100 mEq/kg TS und +200 mEq/kg TS, Kalziumgehalt 4-6 g/kg TS). Zur Kontrolle der Wirkung der jeweiligen Vorbereiterration auf den Kalziumstoffwechsel der Kühe wurden Blutproben von den gekalbten Tieren (n=705 mit Fütterung anionischer Salze und n=168 mit kalziumreduzierter Diät) und Harnproben (n=445 mit Fütterung anionischer Salze und n=135 mit kalziumreduzierter Diät) von den Tieren aus der Vorbereitungsfütterung genommen. Zusätzlich wurde in regelmäßigen Abständen Futterproben (n=13 mit Fütterung anionischer Salze und n=6 mit kalziumreduzierter Diät) der Vorbereiterration untersucht. Der Kaliumgehalt der Futterration war in der vorliegenden Untersuchung der bestimmende Faktor der DCAB (sr2 = 0,23; p < 0,05) und damit hauptsächlich für die Effekte auf den Säure-Basen-Haushalt der Kühe verantwortlich. Zur Berechnung der DCAB sollte die schon hauptsächlich in der Praxis genutzte Formel nach ENDER (1971) Verwendung finden, da sie sich international durchgesetzt hat und sich die Referenzwerte für den Einsatz einer Anionenration überwiegend auf sie beziehen. Der erfolgreiche Einsatz einer Anionenration führte in der vorliegenden Untersuchung zu signifikant höheren mittleren Serumkalziumkonzentrationen im Vergleich zur kalziumreduzierten Diät (1,93 mmol/l vs. 1,83 mmol/l) um die Kalbung. Durch die Nutzung des Anionenkonzeptes kam es im Vergleich zur kalziumreduzierten Vorbereitungsfütterung zu positiven Effekten auf die Tiergesundheit in Form von niedrigeren Erkrankungsinzidenzen. Besonders deutlich wurde dies anhand der Gebärpareseinzidenz. So führte die Verwendung der anionischen Salze zu einer signifikant geringeren Gebärpareseinzidenz (6,3% vs. 10,2%). Der große Anteil hypokalzämischer Tiere um die Abkalbung (ungefähr 50% der pluriparen Kühe und 20% der Jungkühe), der sich mit der internationalen Literatur deckt, macht deutlich, dass jeder Milchviehbetrieb ein strategisches und systematisches Prophylaxekonzept zur Verminderung der klinischen und subklinischen Hypokalzämie benötigt. Er stellt aber auch in Frage, ob der derzeit gültige Grenzwert der Serumkalziumkonzentration von 2,0 mmol/l zur Beurteilung der Kalziumhomöostase im unmittelbaren peripartalen Zeitraum geeignet ist. Die Ergebnisse der vorliegenden Arbeit stehen im Einklang mit dem aktuellen Stand der Wissenschaft zur physiologischen Wirkung der anionischen Salze. Dieses Wissen bildet die Grundlage für eine erfolgreiche und zugleich sichere Anwendung der Anionenration zur Prophylaxe des für die Tiergesundheit wichtigen Komplexes der Hypokalzämie. Die Ansäuerung mit Verschiebung der pH- und NSBA-Werte in den sauren Bereich (pH < 7,8; NSBA < +50 mmol/l) ist auf den Einsatz der anionischen Salze zurückzuführen. Die erhöhte Kalziumkonzentration im Harn (7 bis 15 mmol/l) zeigt die gewünschte Wirkung der anionischen Salze an. Der Rationswechsel mit dem Absetzen der anionischen Salze hebt diese Ansäuerung auf und führt zu einem sprunghaften Anstieg der pH- und NSBA-Werte (pH > 7,8; NSBA > +100 mmol/l) bei gleichzeitigem Absinken der Harnkalziumwerte (< 3,0 mmol/l). Über die Bestimmung des Harn-pH, der NSBA und der Harnkalziumkonzentration ist der erreichte Ansäuerungsgrad im Zusammenhang mit den Effekten auf die Kalziummobilisation und zugleich die Bioverfügbarkeit von Kalzium aus dem Futter als laufende Maßnahme in der Herdenüberwachung zu kontrollieren. Die ansäuernden Effekte der anionischen Salze sind dabei am Tier selbst mit Hilfe der Harnparameter (Harn-pH, NSBA, Harnkalziumkonzentration) einzustellen. Eine Kontrolle der Anionenration ist durch Einzel- und Poolproben möglich. Die Streuung der Werte der Futteranalysen und Harnparameter zeigen, dass der Einsatz einer Anionenration eine routinemäßige begleitende Überwachung erfordert. Aufgrund der individuellen Streuung der Einzelwerte im Zielbereich der Ansäuerung (DCAB um 0 mEq/kg TS) ist die Schaffung differenzierter Referenzbereiche mit sicherer ansäuernder Wirkung für die Bewertung der Pool- und der Einzelproben notwendig. Aus den eigenen Ergebnissen lassen sich für die Pool- (pH: 7,0 bis 7,7; NSBA: 0 mmol/l bis +30 mmol/l) und Einzelproben (pH: 6,2 bis 7,8; NSBA: -50 mmol/l bis +50 mmol/l) Referenzwerte ableiten, die mit den internationalen v.a. im nordamerikanischen Raum genutzten Referenzwerten für den Einsatz anionischer Salze übereinstimmen. Der Probenentnahmezeitpunkt zur Kontrolle der Anionenration hat nach den eigenen Ergebnissen keinen Einfluss auf das Messergebnis und bestätigt andere Arbeiten. Infolge der individuellen Streuungen der Einzelproben sollte in der praktischen Kontrolle im Stall aus den Harn-pH-Werten der Einzelproben der Mittelwert gebildet werden und dieser mit dem Referenzbereich verglichen werden. In Abhängigkeit von der Herdengröße ist die pH-Bestimmung im Harn mindestens zweimal in der Woche bei 8 bis 10 Kühen durchzuführen, die die Anionenration seit mindestens 3 Tagen fressen. Die erfolgreiche Anwendung einer Anionenration für eine sichere Prophylaxe der Hypokalzämie auf Herdenebene stellt hohe Anforderungen an das Fütterungsmanagement eines Betriebes und setzt eine intensive Kontrolle und Steuerung der Anionenration in der praktischen Anwendung voraus. Bei der Anwendung einer Anionenration sind verschiedene Schwerpunkte zu beachten. Grundlage für die Anwendung von anionischen Salzen ist die Verfütterung einer bedarfs- und wiederkäuergerechten Ration an die Vorbereitungskühe. Zur Vermeidung von Futteraufnahmedepressionen bedingt durch die anionischen Salze sollten geschmacksneutrale und/ oder gekapselte anionische Salze zum Einsatz kommen. Für die sichere Wirkung der Anionenration ist die Erhöhung des Kalziumgehaltes (9 bis 13 g/kg TS) in der Ration von großer Bedeutung. Aus der eigenen Untersuchung kann dabei abgeleitet werden, dass der Bioverfügbarkeit des Kalziums für die Kuh in der Futterration bzw. den einzelnen Futtermitteln eine entscheidende Bedeutung für die sichere Anwendung der Anionenration zukommt. Um den erhöhten Kalziumbedarf bei Verfütterung anionischer Salze zu decken, sollte deshalb Futterkalk genutzt werden, da er als anorganische Kalziumquelle eine hohe und sichere Bioverfügbarkeit für die Kuh aufweist und eine Verfütterung relativ großer Mengen keine relevanten nachteiligen Effekte hat. Daher sind weitere Untersuchungen nötig, die die Bioverfügbarkeit von Kalzium in den einzelnen Futtermitteln charakterisieren, um die Kalziumsubstitution einer Anionenration weiter zu verbessern.

The aim of this study was the improvement of concepts for the efficient application of anionic salts to optimise prophylactic effects whilst minimising side effects. To this end, an observational study was made of a commercial dairy farm (housing 1 700 lactating Holstein-Frisian dairy cows, annual average production about 11 000 kg of milk, 3.83% fat and 3.33% protein). The anionic rations were compared with a low calcium diet to analyse the effects on the metabolism and health of the cows of feeding anionic salts. The application of anionic salts was made over a 9 months period according to a test plan (aim: DCAD around 0 mEq/kg DM, calcium content 9-14 g Ca/kg DM). Afterwards the dairy farm switched from the feeding of the anionic rations to the low calcium diet (aim: DCADbetween +100 mEq/kg DM and +200 mEq/kg DM, calcium content 4-6 g Ca/kg DM). In order to record the effect of the different feed preparations on the metabolism of the cows, blood samples were taken from the calving animals (n=705 fed with anionic salts and n=168 with the low calcium diet) and urine samples (n=445 fed with anionic salts and n=135 with the the low calcium diet) from the cows in the close-up-period. Furthermore feed samples from the prepared rations (n=13 fed with anionic salts and n=6 with the the low calcium diet) were also examined in regular intervals. The potassium content of the feed rations in this study was the determining factor for the DCAD (sr2 = 0,23; p < 0,05). Therefore the potassium content mainly determines the acidbase balance of the cows. To calculate the DCAD the in practice widely used formula of ENDER (1971) should be applied because it is internationally recognised and the reference values for the application of anionic rations are largely based on it. The successful application of anionic rations led in this study to a significant increase in average serum calcium concentrations compared with the calcium reduced diet (1.93 mmol/l vs. 1.83 mmol/l) during calving. The application of the anionic concept gave rise to positive effects on the health of the animals in the form of reduced incidence of illnesses in comparison with the low calcium diet. This was particularly noticeable in the incidences of parturient hypocalcaemia. The use of anionic salts led to a reduction of parturient hypocalcemia incidences (6.3% vs. 10.2%). The large proportion of hypocalcemic animals (about 50% of the multipara cows and 20% of the cows in the first lactation), which is comparable with the international literature, makes clear that every dairy farm requires a strategic and systematic prophylactic concept for the reduction of clinical and sub-clinical hypocalcemia. It also questions whether the current serum calcium concentration threshold of 2.0 mmol/l for the assessment of calcium homeostasis in the immediate peripartum period is appropriate. The results of this study concur with the current scientific understanding of the physiological effects of anionic salts. This knowledge provides the basis for the successful and safe prophylactic effect of anionic rations for important improvements in animal health by reducing the complications of hypocalcemia. The acidification, with a shift of the pH and NABE values into the acidic interval (pH < 7.8; NABE < +50 mmol/l), was caused by the application of the anionic salts. The increased calcium concentrations in the urine (7 to 15 mmol/l) show the proposed effect of the anionic salts. The change in feed through the elimination of the anionic salts removed this acidification and led to an increase of the pH and NABE values (pH > 7.8, NABE > +100 mmol/l) and simultaneously to a decrease of the calcium concentration in the urine (< 3.0 mmol/l). By measuring the pH, NABE and calcium concentration of the urine the achieved level of acidification in conjungtion with effects on the calcium mobilisation and the bioavailability of calcium in the feed can be determined and used operatively to control the herd. The acidifying effects of the anionic salts can be adjusted at the animals from their urine parameters (urine-pH, NABE, urine calcium concentration) alone. It is possible to monitor the anionic rations via single or pool samples. The variations in the values from the feed analysis and urine parameters show that the application of anionic rations requires regular monitoring. Owing to the individual variance of the values around the intended acidification level (DCAD around 0 mEq/kg TS) it is necessary to determine reference ranges for the safe acidification effects in the evaluation of pool and single samples. From the results of this study reference ranges can be derived for pool (pH: 7.0 to 7.7; NABE: 0 mmol/l) and single samples (pH: 6.2 to 7.8; NABE: -50 mmol/l to +50 mmol/l) which agree with the international, mainly used in North America, reference values for the use of anionic salts. The time of sampling for controlling the anionic rations does not have any influence on the measurement which confirms the results of other studies. Due to the variation in individual values from single urine pH samples, the mean of the single samples should be calculated and compared with the reference values for practical monitoring at the farm. Depending on the size of the herd the pH should be determined at least twice a week from the urine of 8 to 10 cows which have been feeding anionic rations for at least 3 days. The successful use of anionic rations as a safe prophylactic tool to prevent hypocalcemia in a dairy herd is dependent upon high standards of feed management on the farm and in practice requires intensive monitoring and control of the anionic rations. There are several important points to consider to use anionic rations effectivly. Basis of application of anionic salts is the feeding of a diet which meets the requirements and ensures rumination. In order to avoid depressing feed intake, taste neutral anionic salts and/or capsules should be used. It is important to increase the calcium content (9 to 13 g/kg DM) of the feed for the safe use of anionic rations. From this study it can be inferred that the bioavailability of calcium for the cow from the feed or individual rations has a decisive effect on the safe use of anionic salts. To allow for the increased calcium requirements in the feed calciumcarbonate should be used because it is an inorganic source of calcium which provides high and safe bioavailability for the cow and can be added in relatively large amounts without negative effects. Therefore further research is required regarding the bioavailability of calcium in individual feeding stuffs which will improve the calcium substitution of anionic rations.
