Estudo da ecdise em répteis de cativeiro

Ecdise é o ato de muda ou derramamento de uma camada epidérmica externa que envolve, no caso dos répteis, o desenvolvimento de uma zona de clivagem entre o velho e o novo estrato córneo epidérmico em crescimento. O estímulo e a frequência da ecdise parecem ser influenciados por diversos fatores, dos quais se destacam a temperatura, a humidade do ar e o estado nutricional. Sendo um processo fisiológico, que pode afetar o comportamento dos répteis, pretendeu-se com este trabalho estudar, através do acompanhamento diário dos animais, o processo de muda em diferentes espécies de répteis cativos. O estudo desenvolveu-se num prazo de 3 meses, em um período de transição de estação, de meses frios (fevereiro, março e abril) para meses mais quentes. Para este estudo foi utilizado um total de 82 animais, de 26 espécies diferentes de répteis cativos no Zoo da Maia, sendo que, nestes animais foi possível efetuar, para além de observações diárias, os seus registos de ecdise, o acompanhamento a nível nutricional, pesagens e medições (pré e pós ecdise), bem como o registo semanal da temperatura geral e da percentagem de humidade do ar dos seus habitats. Os principais objetivos deste trabalho passaram por avaliar o comportamento animal durante toda a fase de ecdise; analisar as possíveis mudanças na sua estrutura física e no seu estado geral e ainda determinar qual a frequência e tipo de muda efetuada por estes animais cativos, no final verificar comparativamente, resultados obtidos com aqueles que estão disponíveis na bibliografia. Foi possível concluir que animais da mesma espécie, sujeitos às mesmas condições de maneio, não respondem de igual forma, no que diz respeito a este processo de renovação epidérmica. Apesar da referência, feita por muitos autores, acerca de uma estreita relação entre o estado nutricional e a ecdise, não foi possível, no nosso estudo, estabelecer essa relação. De uma forma geral percebe-se que cada animal tem as suas próprias necessidades a nível fisiológico e que, embora alguns fatores possam influenciar o processo de muda, devem ser reunidas determinadas condições. Constatamos, no entanto, que as espécies sujeitas a avaliação, na sua maioria, conseguiram reunir estas condições para efetivar a muda. Sabendo que a ecdise é um fenómeno fisiológico importante para os répteis constata-se que o Zoo da Maia reúne todas as condições para a estabulação dos animais que foram sujeitos a avaliação.

Ecdysis is the act of moulting or shedding an outer skin or epidermal layer which involves, in the case of reptiles, the development of a zone of cleavage between the old and the new growing epidermal corneous stratum. The stimulation and frequency of ecdysis appear to be influenced by a number of factors, such as temperature, air humidity and nutritional status. As a physiological process, typical of reptiles, affecting the physiognomy and behavior of animals, it was intended with this work to study, through the daily monitoring of animals, the process of molting in different species of captive reptiles. The study was carried out for three months, during a seasonal transition from colder months (February, March and April) to warmer ones. For this study, a total of 82 animals from 26 different species of captive reptiles were observed in the Maia Zoo. In these animals, it was possible to register, in addition to daily observations, their ecdysis records, (pre-and post ecdysis), as well as the weekly record of the temperature and humidity of their habitats. The main objectives of this work were to try to evaluate animal behavior during the ecdysis phase and to analise the possible changes in its physiognomy. In addition, it has been attempted to determine the frequency and type of moult carried out by these captive animals to compare these physiological parameters with those available in literature and relating to their wild homologues. It was possible to conclude that animals of the same species, even when subject to identical conditions, do not respond in the same ways to the process of their epidermal renewal. Despite the reference of many authors on the relationship between nutritional status and ecdysis, it is not clear to what extent this is a cause that can influence the shedding process. It can be concluded that, even though some factors may have an influence on an animal’s ecdysis, each animal has its own needs in terms of physiology. It was not possible to guarantee a direct link between these factors and the epidermal renewal process, must be met certain conditions for an occurrence of the phenomenon. We found, however, how the subject covers an evaluation, most of them were able to meet these conditions to effect the change. Knowing that it is an important physiological phenomenon for the reptiles, it is verified that the Maia Zoo meets all the conditions for housing of the animals that carry out an evaluation.
