Influence of antibiotic ceftriaxone on the development of the yellow mealworm beetle (Tenebrio molitor L.) | Развитие большого мучного хрущака (Tenebrio molitor L.) под влиянием антибиотика цефтриаксона

Antibiotics can enter the soil with waste and affect insects in their natural habitat, moreover they are often found in feed for farm animals, which is also used for rearing insects for food and feed. The aim of this work was to study the effect of the antibiotic ceftriaxone on the growth, development and reproductive performance of the yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor L.). The experiments were carried out at the insectarium of the All-Russian Research Institute for Food Additives (St. Petersburg, Russia) from July to October 2022. The effect of ceftriaxone (Biosintez, Russia) on insects at concentrations of 0, 0.1, 1, 10, and 100 mg/kg of feed (wheat bran) dry weight was studied. To obtain the feed with certain antibiotic concentration the following procedure was carried out: ceftriaxone solutions with required concentration were added to wheat bran in a 1:1 ratio and thoroughly mixed, then the feed was dried in a convection dryer at 40 deg. C for 24 h. The experiment included three stages: the study of the growth rate of larvae, the calculation of the number of pupated and turned into adult insects, and the assessment of the number of T. molitor offspring. The results of the study showed that the addition of ceftriaxone to the diet of the yellow mealworm beetles at a concentration of 100 mg/kg led to the acceleration in weight gain by the larvae. No relationship was observed between T. molitor larval survival rate and antibiotic concentration. In addition, no statistically significant differences were found between the fatty acid composition, feed conversion ratios, ash content and water content of the larvae fed on wheat bran with different ceftriaxone concentrations. There was no relationship between the antibiotic content (0-100 mg/kg) and the performance of the yellow mealworm, and no changes were found in the processes of pupation and transformation into imago when the antibiotic was added to the feed.

russe. Антибиотики, попадающие в почву с отходами, а из почвы в растения, способны оказывать влияние на насекомых в их естественной среде обитания. Целью работы была оценка влияния антибиотика цефтриаксона на рост, развитие и размножение большого мучного хрущака (Tenebrio molitor L.). Опыты проводили в инсектарии Всероссийского НИИ пищевых добавок (г. Санкт-Петербург, Россия) с июля по октябрь 2022 года. Для исследования были выбраны следующие концентрации цефтриаксона (Биосинтез, Россия): 0; 0,1; 1; 10 и 100 мг/кг сухой массы корма. Для получения корма с определенным содержанием антибиотика готовили растворы цефтриаксона в воде с необходимой концентрацией, добавляли к пшеничным отрубям в соотношении 1:1 при перемешивании, затем отруби высушивали в конвекционном сушильном шкафу при 40 град. С в течение 1 сут при периодическом помешивании. Эксперимент включал три этапа: исследование скорости роста личинок, подсчет окуклившихся и превратившихся в имаго насекомых и оценку яйцекладущей активности T. molitor. Было установлено, что добавление цефтриаксона в кормовой субстрат большого мучного хрущака в концентрации 100 мг/кг корма привело к небольшому ускорению набора массы личинками. Зависимости между выживаемостью личинок T. molitor и концентрацией антибиотика не наблюдалось. Не обнаружено статистически значимых различий между жирнокислотным составом, коэффициентами конверсии корма, зольностью и содержанием воды в теле личинок, питавшихся кормами с различным содержанием цефтриаксона. Отсутствовала зависимость между концентрацией антибиотика (0-100 мг/кг) и продуктивностью большого мучного хрущака, а также не обнаружено изменений в процессах окукливания и превращения в имаго при добавлении антибиотика в кормовой субстрат.
