NUEVA RUTA DE SÍNTESIS DE GLICOLES A PARTIR DE ACEITES VEGETALES INSATURADOS EMPLEANDO CATALIZADORES ÁCIDOS HETEROGÉNEOS NEW SYNTHESIS ROUTE FOR GLYCOLS FROM UNSATURATED VEGETABLE OILS USING HETEROGENEOUS ACIDIC CATALYSTS

Las estructuras únicas y las características físicas de las grasas proporcionan una amplia gama de aplicaciones; las insaturaciones reactivas de ciertos ácidos grasos se explotan para generar compuestos con mayor diversidad de aplicación (industria farmacéutica, cosmética, alimenticia, etc.). En este trabajo se reportan los resultados obtenidos en la hidroxilación de oleato de metilo (9-Octadecenoic acid, methyl ester) mediante un proceso que consiste en producir un epóxido usando el método de Prileschajew, y apertura de dicho epóxido con agua. Para ambas etapas se investigó el uso de catalizadores ácidos heterogéneos meso- y macro-porosos de tipo resinas de poliestireno sulfonadas (Amberlite IR120, Amberlyst 15, Dowex50X2). Los resultados indican que para la hidroxilación selectiva de aceites vegetales con ácidos percarboxílicos y catálisis ácida heterogénea, es decisivo maximizar el contacto del compuesto intermedio (epóxido) con los sitios ácidos, lo cual puede ser logrado con resinas ácidas con bajo nivel de entrecruzamiento (bajo porcentaje de DVB) o con alta área superficial; además, la producción de glicoles se ve favorecida selectivamente con solventes apróticos con alta constante dieléctrica.<br>Unique structures of fats and oils, together with their physical characteristics provide them a large range of applications; the reactive unsaturated fatty acids are commonly used to generate compounds with greater diversity of application (pharmaceutical, cosmetics and food industries). Results obtained in the hydroxylation of methyl oleate (9-Octadecenoic acid, methyl ester) by producing the epoxide, using Prileschajew reaction, and the following epoxide opening with water are presented. For both stages the use of heterogenous meso- and macroporous acidic catalysts based on resins of sulfonated polystyrene (Amberlite IR120, Amberlyst 15, Dowex50X2) was investigated. To provide a selective hydroxylation of vegetal oils with percarboxylic acids and heterogenous acidic catalysts, the crucial issue is to maximize the contact of the intermediate compound (epoxide) with the acidic sites. This can be achieved with acid resins with low cross-linking level (low DVB content) or with high superficial area. In addition, glycols production is selectively favored with the use of aprotic solvents with high dielectric constant.
