A competição entre plantas pelos diferentes fatores da produção vem recebendo, a bastante tempo, a atenção do homem. As diversas espécies vegetais reagem a cada tipo de competição de maneira diferente, mas apesar do seu importante papel na organização dos indivíduos num dado habitat, a competição inter e intra especifica é responsável pela redução da produtividade de muitas culturas, restringindo a diversificação dos consorciamentos e exigindo cuidados intensivos no controle da infestação por plantas daninhas. Nos consorciamentos, a modificação da qualidade e intensidade da radiação solar imposta pela cultura de porte mais elevado é um fator de seleção das espécies botânicas capazes de se desenvolverem sob esta condição; a melhor utilização e aproveitamento da energia solar e dos espaços vertical e horizontal aliada ao favorecimento da ciclagem de nutrientes e melhoria da estrutura do solo são vantagens explícitas do consorciamento. Muitos pesquisadores consideram a competição por luz, devido à interferência da parte aérea, mais importante e complexa do que a competição pelo substrato. Algumas espécies reagem à competição por luz ativando mecanismos complexos e se adaptando ao novo "status" de radiação, o que lhes confere uma grande capacidade adaptativa. Atualmente, um dos grandes desafios que se impõem aos pesquisadores é o desenvolvimento de técnicas de consorciamento em que se obtenha aumento da interação positiva entre as culturas, minimizando a competição. Para tal é primordial a compreensão dos processos competitivos envolvidos e este artigo apresenta uma breve revisão sobre eles.<br>The intercropping for the various production factors by the plants has being receiving attention for a long time. The different plant species have a diverse way of reacting to each kind of competition. However, besides its important role on the individual organization in an habitat, the inter and intra-especific competition is responsible for the reduction of productivity in many crops. This reduce the diversification of the intercropping and requiring intensive care in the weeds control. The change in the light intensity and quality impose by the higher crop in the intercropping is a selection factor in the species that can develop under this condition. Better use and utilization of the solar radiation, of the vertical and horizontal space, better nutrient cycling, and improvement of the soil structure are great intercropping advantages. Several researchers consider light competition, due to interference of the plant upper part, more important and complex than the substrato competition. Some species react to light competition by activation of complex mechanisms and by adaptation to the new light status. This gives to these species a great capacity of adaptation. Nowadays, one of the biggest challenge to the researchers is the development of intercropping techniques to increase the positive interaction among crops reducing, consequently, the competition. Thus, if is primordial the understanding of the competition processes involved and this article presents a briefreview about them.
