An investigation into the highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreak that occurred in Japan between 2017 and 2018 and the measures taken to control it

A highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) outbreak occurred for the first time in Kagawa prefecture in January 2018. It was caused by the H5N6 HPAI virus (HPAIV), which belongs to clade 2.3.4.4. Genetic analysis showed that this virus was not a descendant of the H5N6 HPAIV that caused avian influenza outbreaks in Japan during the previous winter. Excretions of the virus from the trachea of infected chickens were significantly lower than the mean titers from Japanese HAPIV infected birds. In order to increase the probability of detecting the HPAIV in suspected chickens, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries ordered an increase in the number of the birds to be examined using rapid kits from 5 birds to more than 11 birds.
