Adaptability of the new two-rowed barley cultivar 'Haruka Nijo' resistant to barley yellow mosaic virus (BaYMV) typeIII in Fukuoka Prefecture

The new two-rowed barley cultivar 'Haruka Nijo' resistant to barley yellow mosaic virus (BaYMV) type III was developed at NARO Kyushu Okinawa Agricultural Research Center. To overcome an outbreak of BaYMV type III in Fukuoka Prefecture, we evaluated the growth characteristics, yield potential, inspection grade and pearling properties of 'Haruka Nijo'. All assessments were conducted in Buzen, Chikugo and six different fields in Fukuoka prefecture. Compared with the standard cultivar 'Nishinohoshi', 'Haruka Nijo' had a two-to six-days earlier heading time, and matured same-to three-days earlier. Furthermore, the following traits distinguished 'Haruka Nijo' from the standard cultivar 'Nishinohoshi': shorter culm length, higher panicle number, superior 1000-grain weight, higher yield (above 10%), higher resistance to lodging, superior volume weight, and a longer time to 55% and 70% pearling. Traits for which the two compered barley cultivars were similar included the following: inspection grade, grassy kernel ratio and whiteness, and resistance to Fusarium head blight, although 'Haruka Nijo' was slightly less resistant. Both the high yielding ability and overall pearling aptitude of 'Haruka Nijo' were recognized, and in 2014, this cultivar was adopted as a semi-recommended variety in Fukuoka Prefecuture.
