Estudio de la percepción del entorno natural en las actividades al aire libre y su relación con el bienestar

Several studies show the benefits of being close to natural and biodiverse environments: they strengthen the immune system, lower blood pressure and heart rate, improve attention, reduce anxiety and stress, and have an impact on well-being. Since COVID19, people have placed value on natural spaces and rural areas, spending much time indoors. There is a need for biophilic designs that facilitate connection with nature for wellbeing, quantifying benefits and searching for evidence. This study analyses in detail how contact with nature is perceived in outdoor activities and its relationship with well-being, as a function of socio-demographic variables. The research is based on a survey designed by applying the DELPHI method in collaboration with a panel of 18 experts in the natural environment, wellbeing and leisure, resulting in a robust questionnaire. A total of 515 Spanish residents, 54% female and 46% male, participated in the survey anonymously and voluntarily between September 2021 and February 2023. The analysis of the results shows the complex relationships between activities in the natural environment and the impact on well-being, as they depend on different factors. Age is a key factor in the study because of its interdependence with other aspects. Contact with nature has an impact on holistic well-being in adults and psychological well-being in young people. The environment is a key factor in regulating emotions and improving psychological well-being. Emotional state varies according to life satisfaction, age, health status, personality and place of residence. In the research, duration and frequency are related to satisfaction with the activity. The duration of the activity may depend on the distance to the environment, the priority given and the disconnection from the mobile phone. According to the study, activity in contact with nature has an impact on life satisfaction, improved mood and general well-being. This leads to greater life satisfaction, which in turn increases physical activity, the relationship with nature and the recommendation of nature. However, the natural environment is hardly perceived for its rehabilitation values. According to the results, contact with nature would be higher in women, in older, extroverted and active people, satisfied with the activity and with life, who do the activity every day for more than one hour, have a high appreciation of the natural environment, give preference to this activity, and for whom cost is not an inconvenience. The study confirms how pro-environmental behaviour is linked to emotional attachment to the natural environment. Those who are more satisfied with the activity have a more ecocentric profile, being more concerned about the pollution of the natural environment, the impact of their behaviour on it, the loss of biodiversity and the destruction of native species. Determinants such as age, life satisfaction, personality, activity level and education can condition environmental sensitivity, which influences relationships and behaviour towards the natural environment. This thesis provides a consistent model of the relationship between well-being, contact with nature in outdoor activities, environmental awareness and pro-environmental behaviour; and its possible application in the field of environmental education, sustainable forest management, biophilic design of spaces and public health. This area of research, promoted by COVID19, requires in-depth studies over time, with a therapeutic and social approach to natural environments for a population in demographic transition. Rethinking public spaces to promote nature-based activities, mobility and social interaction. RESUMEN Diversos estudios muestran los beneficios de estar próximos a entornos naturales y biodiversos: fortalecen el sistema inmunológico, disminuyen la presión arterial y el ritmo cardíaco, mejoran la atención, reducen la ansiedad y el estrés, repercutiendo en el bienestar. Tras la COVID19, las personas han puesto en valor los espacios naturales y las áreas rurales, al pasar gran parte de su tiempo en interiores. Se necesitan diseños biofílicos que faciliten la conexión con la naturaleza en pro del bienestar, cuantificando beneficios y buscando evidencias. Este estudio analiza en detalle cómo se percibe el contacto con la naturaleza en las actividades al aire libre y su relación con el bienestar, en función de variables sociodemográficas. La investigación realizada basada en una encuesta diseñada con el método DELPHI en colaboración con un panel de 18 expertos del Medio Natural, el Bienestar y el Ocio, resultando un sólido cuestionario. En la encuesta han participado 515 residentes en España, un 54% de mujeres y un 46% de hombres, de forma anónima y voluntaria, entre septiembre del 2021 y febrero del 2023. El análisis de los resultados constata las relaciones complejas entre actividades en el entorno natural y repercusión en el bienestar, al depender de diversos factores. La edad es determinante en el estudio, por su interdependencia con otros aspectos. El contacto con la naturaleza resulta influyente en el bienestar integral en adultos y el bienestar psicológico en jóvenes. El entorno ambiental es clave en la regulación de las emociones y la mejora del bienestar psicológico. El estado emocional varía en función del grado de satisfacción con la vida, la edad, el estado de salud, la personalidad y el lugar de residencia. En la investigación, duración y frecuencia están relacionados con la satisfacción con la actividad. La duración de la actividad puede depender de la distancia al entorno, la prioridad asignada y de la desconexión del móvil. Según el estudio realizado, la actividad en contacto con la naturaleza repercute en satisfacción con la vida, mejora del estado de ánimo y bienestar integral. Redundando en una mayor satisfacción con la misma e incrementando así la actividad física, la relación con la naturaleza y recomendándola. Si bien, el medio natural es escasamente percibido por sus valores de rehabilitación. De acuerdo con los resultados, el contacto con la naturaleza sería mayor en la mujer, en personas de edad, extrovertidas y activas, satisfechas con la actividad y con la vida, realizan la actividad todos los días más de una hora, tienen una valoración alta del entorno natural, dan preferencia a esta actividad, y para las que el coste no es inconveniente. El estudio confirma como el comportamiento proambiental está asociado a la conexión emocional al medio natural. Los más satisfechos con la actividad tienen un perfil más ecocéntrico, mayor preocupación por la contaminación del entorno natural, como su conducta afecta al mismo, por la pérdida de biodiversidad y por la destrucción de especies autóctonas. Determinantes como edad, satisfacción con la vida, personalidad, nivel de actividad y de formación pueden condicionar la sensibilidad medioambiental, que influye en la relación y conducta con el entorno natural. Esta tesis aporta un modelo consistente en la relación entre bienestar, contacto con la naturaleza en actividades al aire libre, sensibilización y concienciación medioambiental y comportamiento proambiental; y su posible aplicación al campo de la educación ambiental, la gestión forestal sostenible, el diseño biofílico de espacios y la salud pública. Se requieren estudios profundos en el tiempo, en este campo de investigación impulsado tras la COVID19, con un enfoque terapéutico y social de los entornos naturales para una población en transición demográfica. Replanteando así, los espacios públicos para promover las actividades relacionadas con la naturaleza, la movilidad y la interacción social.
