Carbono e nutrientes no solo e a sustentabilidade do sistema soja-algodão no Cerrado brasileiro | Carbon and nutrients in the soil and the sustainability of soybean-cotton production system in the brazilian cerrado region

O Cerrado brasileiro representa a grande fronteira agrícola do momento para atender o aumento na demanda mundial por alimentos e fibras. Com o objetivo de avaliar a sustentabilidade técnica da produção de soja e algodão na região do Cerrado sob três sistemas de manejo do solo (preparo convencional-PC, cultivo mínimo-CM e plantio direto-PD), foram utilizados quatro experimentos de longa duração, conduzidos em Luziânia-GO, Costa Rica-MS, Tasso Fragoso-MA e Sapezal-MT, por 13, 11, 5 e 4 anos, respectivamente. Os solos em estudo foram classificados como Latossolo Vermelho Amarelo, Latossolo Vermelho, Latossolo Vermelho Amarelo e Latossolo Vermelho, com teores de argila de 653, 656, 255 and 452 g kg-¹, respectivamente. Os teores e estoques de C e N, nas camadas de 0-5, 5-10 e 10-20 cm, e os teores de P disponível e de Ca, Mg e K trocáveis nas camadas de 0-5, 5-10, 10-20, 20-40 e 40-60 cm foram avaliados. Também foram avaliados a produção de matéria seca e adição de C, a reciclagem de nutrientes das culturas comerciais (soja, milho e algodão) e de cobertura, a produtividade de grãos e fibras das culturas comerciais e o balanço de P, K, Ca e Mg em cada experimento. O cultivo do solo de Cerrado provoca redução dos estoques de C, os quais podem ser recuperados aos seus níveis originais por meio da utilização do PD e de um sistema de rotação de culturas com alta adição de C. Para manter os níveis de estoque de C no solo sob PD, CM e PC, na média dos quatro locais estudados, estima-se que são necessárias adições anuais de C da ordem de 5,0, 5,2 e 6,4 Mg ha-¹, respectivamente. A eficiência agronômica das adubações fosfatadas variaram de 2 a 20%, das adubações potássicas de 70 a 107%, de cálcio entre 47 e 81% e de Mg entre 31 e 91%. Os sistemas de manejo do solo utilizados foram eficientes para garantir altas produtividades das culturas, ainda não havendo diferenciação entre eles na média dos anos. Sistemas de produção com soja e algodão na região do Cerrado, utilizando mínimo revolvimento do solo para evitar presença de erosão, são tecnicamente sustentáveis. Para isso, as culturas utilizadas na rotação de culturas devem adicionar C ao solo em quantidade suficiente para compensar a decomposição da matéria orgânica do solo. Além disso, a fertilização deve atender a exportação de nutrientes pelas culturas e eventuais perdas do sistema.

The Brazilian Savannah (Cerrado) at present represents the greatest agricultural frontier in the world able to supply the increasing demand for food and fiber. With the objective to evaluate the soybean and cotton production and their technical sustainability in the Cerrado under three soil management systems (conventional tillage-CT, minimum tillage-MT and no-tillage-NT), four long term experiments were evaluated, with 13, 11, 5 and 4 years, located, respectively, in Luziânia-Goiás, Costa Rica-Mato Grosso do Sul, Tasso Fragoso-Maranhão and Sapezal-Mato Grosso, , with clay content of 653, 656, 255 and 452 g kg-¹, respectively. All soils were classified as Typic Hapludox. The soils were sampled in 5 layers: 0-5; 5-10, 10-20; 20-40 and 40-60 cm, and determined the C and N concentrations and stocks up to 20 cm, labile P and exchangeable K, Ca and Mg in all depths. Moreover, the dry matter production, C input and nutrients recycling from the cash crops (soybean, corn and cotton) and cover crops were measured. The crop yields from the cash crops also were evaluated. With all these data the P, K, Ca and Mg balance in the soil were calculated. The annual crops production in the Cerrado soils causes losses of the soil C stocks, but it can be recovered up to the original level using soil conservative system (no till) and a crop rotation system with high C input. For sustaining the C stock levels in the soils under NT, MT and CT are necessary C additions of 5.0, 5.2 and 6.4 Mg ha-¹ ano-1, respectively. The agronomic efficiency for P and K fertilization, and Ca and Mg additions were between 2- 20%, 70-107%, 47-81% and 31-91%, respectively. The soil management systems were efficient in sustaining high crop yields without difference among them in the average of the years. Production systems with soybean and cotton, using minimum soil tillage for avoid soil erosion, are sustainable in the Cerrado region. For this, the C addiction by the cash crops and cover crops in the rotation systems have to add enough amount of C to compensate SOM decomposition. Besides that, the fertilization should supply at least the crop nutrient exportation and eventual losses.
