Mancha parda em arroz : importância epidemiológica da incidência de Bipolaris oryzae na semente, padrão espacial de lesões nas folhas e escala diagramática de severidade | Rice brown spot: epidemiological importance of the Incidence of Bipolaris oryzae on seeds, spatial patterns of Lesions on leaves and diagrammatic scale for severity

A mancha parda do arroz irrigado (MP), causada pelo fungo Bipolaris oryzae, é uma doença importante e que pode ter a semente como fonte de inóculo inicial. Os objetivos deste estudo foram: (1) avaliar o efeito de níveis de incidência de B. oryzae em sementes de arroz no desenvolvimento da cultura e epidemias de MP; (2) avaliar o padrão espacial de lesões de MP nas folhas por meio de análise digital; (3) elaborar e validar escalas diagramáticas para auxiliar estimativas visuais de severidade. Onze ensaios de campo com tratamentos de níveis de incidência de B. oryzae nas sementes (0, 3, 6, 12, 24 e 48%) foram instalados em Bagé e Cachoeirinha, RS, durante as safras 2008/09, 2009/10 e 2010/11. As variáveis avaliadas foram: estande de plantas, incidência e severidade da MP, produtividade e incidência de B. oryzae nos grãos colhidos nos ensaios. Nas parcelas experimentais da safra 2009/10, em Cachoeirinha, 350 folhas-bandeira com sintomas de MP foram coletadas e digitalizadas, retocadas e analisadas quanto à severidade da MP, e número e tamanho de lesões. O padrão espacial de distribuição de lesões na folha também foi determinado por análises específicas. Quatro escalas diagramáticas com dois incrementos (linear ou exponencial) e duas de coloração (preto e branco e imagens reais) foram elaboradas. A validação foi realizada, onde avaliou-se a repetibilidade, a reprodutibilidade, a acurácia e a precisão das estimativas por análise de correlação, regressão e concordância. Houve efeito dos níveis de incidência de B. oryzae na semente no estande de plantas em 8 ensaios, com redução do número de plantas em função do inóculo na semente, bem como na incidência da MP em três ensaios da safra 2009/10, com aumento da incidência em função da incidência de B. oryzae nas sementes. Contudo, não se observou efeito na severidade, produtividade e infecção de sementes para as condições dos experimentos instalados. A severidade das folhas coletadas foi majoritariamente baixa, com 55% dos casos apresentando severidades menores de 2%. As lesões de mancha parda ocorrem de maneira predominantemente aleatória, com tendência de agregação em severidades mais altas. Houve tendência geral entre os avaliadores de superestimarem a severidade observada quando sem auxílio. No entanto, com o uso das escalas diagramáticas, seja linear ou exponencial, houve melhora da qualidade das estimativas feitas pelos avaliadores, com destaque para as escalas em cores que melhorou a reprodutibilidade e repetibilidade das estimativas.

Rice brown spot (BS), caused by Bipolaris oryzae, is a fungal disease in which epidemics may originate from seedborne inoculum. The objectives of this study were to: (1) evaluate the effect seed-borne B. oryzae inoculum on crop development and BS epidemics; (2) determine the spatial distribution of BS lesions on leaves using digital analysis; and (3) develop and validate diagrammatic scales to aid visual estimates of BS severity. Eleven field trials were carried out in two locations in RS State (Bagé and Cachoeirinha) and three growing seasons (2008/09, 2009/10 and 2010/11) using cv. IRGA424. Treatments consisted of incremental incidence levels of B. oryzae in a seed lot (0, 3, 6, 12, 24 and 48%). The variables evaluated were: crop stand (number of seedlings per area unit), BS incidence and severity, rice yield and B. oryzae incidence in mature grains. In the experimental plots of the 2009/10 growing season, in Cachoeirinha, 350 symptomatic flag leaves were collected, scanned, retouched and analyzed for the severity of the BS, and number and size of lesions. The pattern of the distribution of lesions in a rice flagleaf was also determined by spatial analysis. Four diagrammatic scales varying in severity scale (linear or exponential) and color (black and white or true color) were prepared. In the scale validation, repeatability, reproducibility, accuracy and precision of the estimates were assessed by correlation, linear regression and concordance analysis. A significant effect was observed for the incidence of B. oryzae on the crop stand in eight trials; the number of plants was reduced with the increase of fungal incidence on the seeds. Also, BS incidence at the vegetative stages (for three trials analyzed) increased linearly with the increase of fungal incidence levels. No significant effect was found in BR severity, rice yield and seed infection. The BS severity values in the sampled leaves were mostly low (55% of 350 leaves were <2% severity). The distribution pattern of brown spot lesions was predominantly random, with a tendency to aggregate with the increase in severity (>8%). In the validation of the diagrammatic scales, there was an overall tendency of raters to overestimate severity when estimates were made unaided. However, the use of the diagrammatic scales, either with an exponential or linear severity increase, improved accuracy and precision of the estimates made by the raters, especially when using the color scales as an aid which led to improved reliability of the estimates.
