Moisture properties of Scots pine sapwood modified with tannin-hexamine formula

To develop the method for environmentally friendly wood modification using tannin, this research was conducted with different concentrations of hexamine as a crosslinker for tannin. Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) sapwood samples were treated with three different concentrations of hexamine at 6%, 12%, and 18% respectively of the total tannin solid (20 wt%). Bulking coefficient (BC), leaching resistance (LR), weight percentage gain (WPG), volumetric swelling(VS), and anti-swelling efficiency (ASE) were measured to evaluate the efficiency of the treatment. The results suggested that higher hexamine concentrations increased the BC and WPG. The highest LR was attained at 12% hexamine, while the lowest concentration of 6% showed the highest VS. All treated groups showed negative values for the ASE, which is believed to be caused by degradation of the cell walls as well as insufficient polymerization of the tannin-hexamine treatment.
