A field trial of effects of replacement of all of corn contained in feed with brown rice and by-product of sweet potato on growth performance and meat quality of fattening pigs

We previously conducted experiments to elucidate appropriate ratios of brown rice and sweet potato, consideration of using imperfect sweet potato, as an alternative ingredient of corn for finishing pigs. As a result, we concluded that appropriate ratios of brown rice and sweet potato when both of them are contained in a diet for finishing pigs were approximately 50% and 20 to 25%, respectively. Ibaraki Prefecture where the NARO is located is one of the major sweet potato production area. Therefore there are waste sweet potato from sweet potato processing. In this experiment, we investigate the effect on growth performance and quality of pork of feeding both brown rice and byproduct for fattening pigs from 65 kg to 120 kg as a field trial under management of pig farmer in Ibaraki Prefecture. In the experiments, diets contained 50% of brown rice and 25% byproduct of sweet potato (Experiment 1: byproduct of Hoshi-imo, which is steamed, Experiment 2: by product of Imo-yokan, un-cooked) were given to RP pigs whereas commercial diet contained 75% corn were given to the control pigs. In Experiment 1, the average daily gain of RP1 pigs is higher than control pigs (P<0.05), whether there are no difference in the average daily gain in Experiment 2. In Experiment 1 and Experiment 2, feeding both brown rice and byproduct of sweet potato increased total ratios of saturated fatty acids and those of mono-unsaturated fatty acids of inner layer of subcutaneous fat while it decreased those of poly-unsaturated fatty acids. (P<0.05). In conclusion, feeding both brown rice and byproduct of sweet potato is not inferior to feeding corn-based diet in growth performance and meat quality of fattening pigs under management of pig farmer.
