Estimation of carbon storage by wood-based panels in Japan

Carbon storage by wood-based panels excluding plywood in Japan was estimated, using Tier 2 and Tier 3 methods in '2013 Revised Supplementary Methods and Good Practice Guidance Arising from the Kyoto Protocol'. Tier 3 ; country specific method in this report is life time analysis of final products such like building or furniture using logistic function and country specific conversion factors. In Tier 3 method, carbon stock by wood-based panels in 2012 was 14.3 MtC and carbon stock change in 2011 was 0.25 MtC/year. These results almost match Tier 2 results, considering first year's stock in Tier 2 analysis. It means default half-life of 25 years in Tier 2 method is acceptable. In Japan, around 70% of raw materials of wood-based panels is demolition timber chips. It is almost impossible to separate domestic and imported wood of those chips. To choose material recycle is the policy of a country, so it should be accounted as domestic wood.
