A new rice cultivar 'Tenshinouta'

A new rice cultivar 'Tenshinouta' was developed from the progeny of the cross between 'Saikai 201' and 'Kantou 165' at Saga Prefectual Agriculture Research Center in 2003. The breeding objective was to combine superior eating quality (same eating quality of 'Hinohikari'), high yielding and high field resistance to blast. A promising line was selected by bulk breeding and named 'Saga 27' at the F8 generation in 1998. This cultivar was tested in performance tests from 1997 to 2001 for recommendable cultivars. It was registered officially to Ministry of Agriculture. Forestry and Fishery of Japan in 2003. The characteristics of the cultivar are summarized as follow. 1. Heading and maturing date of 'Tenshinouta' is respectively 1day later than those of 'Reihou'. 2. Culm length of 'Tenshinouta' is very shorter and panicle length is slightly shorter than that of 'Reihou'. Panicle number unit area is slightly to 'Reihou'. Plant type of 'Tenshinouta' belongs to intermediate type. 3. Lodging resistance of 'Tenshinouta' is very superior to that of 'Reihou'. 4. In performance tests at the breeding station in normal season transplanting culture, this cultivar is highly yielding ability, its yield is above 10% higher than that of 'Reihou'. 5. The 1000 grain weight of 'Tenshinouta' is slightly heavier than that of 'Reihou'. Visual grain quality of 'Tenshinouta' is superior to that of 'Reihou'. 6. 'Tenshinouta' seems to have the blast resistance gene Pia, i, its field resistance to blast is weak but to bacterial leaf blight is slightly strong. 7. Eating quality of 'Tenshinouta' is excellent and superior to that of 'Hinohikari'.
