To better pathologically understand and investigate the etiology of discoloration of gizzards, 94 discolored gizzards and 10 normal gizzards in broiler chickens were collected from a slaughterhouse to investigate histopathologically and biochemically. In discolored gizzards, the lesions were more severe at the serosal site than at the mucosal site. Histopathologically, vacuolar degeneration or hyaline degeneration of smooth muscle fibers was observed in all cases. In progressed cases, marked infiltration of inflammatory cells in degenerated tissue and inflammatory edema between muscle bundles were observed. These lesions localized or distributed diffusely, or extended longitudinally and vertically to muscle fibers. The results of virological investigation did not support adenoviral infection. Additionally, nutritional abnormality was suspected, so we measured vitamin E and A contents in collected gizzard tissue using high-performance liquid chromatography. There was no significant difference in vitamin A or E content between discolored and normal gizzards.
