Misawa, T. (Donan Agricultural Experiment Station, Agricultural Research Department, Hokkaido Research Organization, Hokuto, Hokkaido (Japan))
In June 2008, leaf sheath rot accompanied by black sclerotia was found in Chinese chive in a field in Shiriuchi, Hokkaido, Japan. The isolate obtained from the tissue with typical symptoms was identified as the leaf blight fungus Botrytis squamosa, based on the morphology and result of PCR-RFLP analysis. The original symptoms were reproduced after artificial inoculation of the isolate with the leaf sheaths of Chinese chive. Furthermore, inoculated leaves with the isolate showed spots, which were similar to symptoms of leaf blight caused by B. squamosa. These results suggested that leaf sheath rot is an additional symptom of Chinese chive diseases caused by B. squamosa.
