Impact of the relocation and opening of Ishigaki Airport on the pineapple production area

Ishigaki Island and Iriomote Island in the Yaeyama Region, along with the northern part of the main island of Okinawa, are the only pineapple production regions in Japan. Originally pineapples were grown for canning, but since the trade liberalization of canned pineapples in 1990, the production volume of canned pineapples has been decreasing. Unlike the production area in the northern part of the main island of Okinawa, in Ishigaki Island many canneries folded around 1996 and the industry switched over to the production of fresh pineapples. The pineapple growing farmers have since been developing and expanding their sales channels on their own. In the normal production areas of agricultural products, the farmers get organized and use the sales network of the Japan Agricultural Cooperative (JA) to use the advantages of scale, however, the farmers on Ishigaki Island started to run independent operations and develop their own sales channels. This resulted in a decrease in the number of farmers who rely on the JA sales route to distribute their products.
