2018
Kawano, M. | Kunimori, T. | Baba, T.
We made a list of the fishes in the Seto Inland Sea off Yamaguchi Prefecture based on hitherto records and our unpublished data. A total of 405 fish species composed of 31 orders and 143 families were identified during the survey period. Gobiidae, Carangidae, Tetraodontidae, Sebastidae, Syngnathidae, Cottidae, Callionymidae and Monacanthidae were major families. The number of tropical/subtropical water species were 30 and occupied 46.9 % of which were newly observed after 1990 and the geographical distribution and habitat were clearly recognized. The number of fish species is more than that in Hiroshima Bay, but considerably less than those in the southwestern Sea of Japan off Yamaguchi Prefecture and the Uwa Sea, suggesting that the number of fish species decreases remarkably through Kanmon Strait and Bungo Channel.
