Nationwide standards about sawn lumber and allowable stresses have improved since the Meiji era in Japan. These standards and allowable stresses were inherited through a large number of establishments and amendments. However, the background and basis of values in many standards and allowable stresses remain unclear or unknown. This paper aims to discuss the history and basis of sawn lumber standards and allowable stresses in Japan.
