The technology of extending harvest time by using colored fruit bag and long-term storage by water supplement of 'Shine Muscat' grapes

We investigated the effect of covering the grapes with a colored fruit bag to extend the harvesting period of the grape variety 'Shine Muscat', and the effect of hydrating the peduncle on grape shelf life. These extensions of harvesting period and fruit shelf life make the logistics of harvesting and distribution more flexible. In commonly used white fruit bags, the fruit skin often turns yellow and skin-browning during the late harvesting season. Therefore, high quality fruits can be harvested only up to 10 days after the best harvesting day. However, using a green or blue colored fruit bag suppresses these discolorations of grape skins. By using these colored fruit bags the high quality fruits can be harvested up to 30 days after the best harvesting day. The optimal time to cover the fruits with colored bags is when grain softening is observed in about half of the fruits. If grapes are covered too early, rise of grape sugar content is dalayed. If grapes are covered too late, the suppressing effect on the skin discoloration decreases. When harvested fruits are stored in a refrigerator set at 0.5 to 2.0degC, the normal storage period is limited to about 60 days due to the withering of the peduncles. If water is supplied to the peduncles from a plastic container, the fruit storage period could be extended to 90 days if 9 ml per fruit is provided, or to 120 days when 21 ml is provided. In addition, it was found that the better depth to insert the peduncles into the water container is about 2.5cm. This limits damage to the fruits during storage.
