The effect of the seeding period on the development of soybean planted after a wheat crop

The sowing period of soybeans after a wheat crop is governed by the harvesting of the wheat crop, and because of weather factor, it usually takes place from late June to early July. Compared to a crop sown after a barley harvest, the yield is low and the land becomes fallow. We considered that clarifying the development of late-sown soybean, its yield, and the limits of late sowing are very important for its cultivation, so we examined the seeding period, the planting density and seed size. 1. As the seeding period of soybeans planted after a wheat crop becomes later, its development period is shortened : from seeding till flowering it is quite shortened, while from flowering till maturity it is shortened not so much. 2. Looking at the matured plant of late-sown soybean, we can say regarding its development, that the length of the main stalk, the number of primary branches, stalk thickness and stalk weight showed a decrease ; stalk weight and the number of primary branches were especially low. Also regarding the yield component there was observed a decrease in the number of pods and in the pod content. 3. By increase the plant density, it was possible to supplement to a certain degree the decrease in individual plant increase caused by late seeding, but this was possible only by till around 5th July. We observed that for Fukui Prefecture this was the limit for late seeding. 4. We found that in the case of soybean seeds used in late sowing, the seeding and early development improved in proportion to the largeness of the seed, and this also had an effect on later development.
