Effects of long-day conditions on growth, yield and quality during the forcing culture of Chinese chive

We examined the effects of a long-day treatment on growth, yield and quality during the forcing culture of Chinese chive (Allium tuberosum Rottier ex Spreng.). A bulb-type fluorescent lamp with a total luminous flux of 810 lumens was installed at a height of about 170 cm, with intervals of 5 m, between two ridges. From early November to early March, the dark period was interrupted for 3 h or the day length was extended to 15 or 16 h. These treatments increased the plant growth rate (i.e. height) and plants were harvested 7 to 12 days earlier in early-to-mid January than in the case of the no-light treatment. Moreover, regarding the plant height, the rate of the lengthening of the leaf sheath was greater than that of the leaf blade. However, the leaf thickness was the same or slightly greater, the leaf width was the same, there were relatively few tillers, and the leaf area index tended to be low. Also, there was little difference from the effects of the no-light in 14 h of extended day length.
