Die effiziente Isolierung von Gebäuden ist sowohl aus ökonomischer als auch ökologischer Sicht besonders wichtig, da sich durch die Reduzierung der zur Erzeugung von Raumwärme benötigten Energie Heizkosten sparen und die Emission von Treibhausgasen reduzieren lassen. Gegenwärtig werden hauptsächlich poröse Schaummaterialien verwendet, deren geringe Wärmeleitung durch den isolierenden Effekt der in den Poren enthaltenen ruhenden Gase erzeugt wird. Aufgrund dieser hochporösen Strukturen ist die mechanische Stabilität solcher Materialien jedoch sehr gering. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit sollten Nanokomposite entwickelt werden, die sowohl eine geringe Wärmeleitfähigkeit als auch ansprechende mechanische Eigenschaften besitzen. In diesem Zusammenhang sollte die Stabilität der Materialien durch den Einsatz von Polymermatrices erzeugt werden. Um die Wärmeleitfähigkeit dieser Stoffe zu verringern, sollten möglichst viele Grenzflächen innerhalb des Werkstoffes erzeugt werden. Dazu wurde ein Gemisch aus drei verschiedenen Sorten von Nanopartikeln durch Solution-Blending in unterschiedliche thermoplastische Polymere integriert. Dabei zeigte sich, dass aufgrund der unterschiedlichen Eigenschaften des hydrophilen Füllstoffes und der hydrophoben Matrix starke Agglomerate innerhalb der Komposite entstehen. Diese Agglomerate stellen Wärmebrücken und Sollbruchstellen dar, wodurch die Eigenschaften der Werkstoffe bezüglich der Stabilität und der Wärmeleitfähigkeit negativ beeinflusst werden. Um die Bildung von Agglomeraten zu vermeiden, wurden die Oberflächeneigenschaften der Füllstoffe so modifiziert, dass diese nun ebenfalls hydrophob waren und polymerisierbare Gruppen trugen. Des Weiteren wurde ein Zwei-Stufen-Prozess entwickelt, der es ermöglicht, die modifizierten Nanopartikel agglomerationsfrei für eine Emulsionspolymerisation zu präparieren. Die Komposite, die so hergestellt wurden, zeigten eine geringfügig verringerte Wärmeleitfähigkeit und gleichzeitig eine Verbesserung der mechanischen Stabilität im Vergleich zum reinen Polymer. Da die Wärmeleitfähigkeit jedoch nur geringfügig verringert werden konnte, musste eine gewisse Porosität in die Komposite eingeführt werden. Um dabei die mechanischen Eigenschaften nicht zu verlieren, wurde diese Porosität durch die Integration hohler modifizierte Nanopartikel erzeugt. Diese Partikel wurden durch verschiedene Verfahren mit Polystyrol als Matrix verbunden. Am vielversprechendsten zeigte sich dabei die Herstellung durch Massenpolymerisation mit Styrol. Die Wärmeleitfähigkeit der hergestellten Materialien konnte dabei auf Werte von unter 0,100 [W/(m∙K)] reduziert werden. Des Weiteren wurden verschiedene Tests zur Ermittlung der mechanischen Stabilität dieser Komposite durchgeführt. Dabei zeigte sich, dass sowohl die Druckfestigkeit, als auch die Härte (nach Vickers), das E-Modul und die Bruchzähigkeit im Vergleich zu reinem Polystyrol erhöht werden konnten und somit deutlich über den entsprechenden Kennwerten der Schaumisolationsmaterialien liegen.

The efficient insulation of buildings is important from an economic and ecological point of view, since the reduction of the energy required to generate space heating saves cost and reduces the emission of greenhouse gases. At present, mainly porous foam materials are used for building insulation, whose low thermal conductivity is caused by the insulating effect of the gas containing pores. Due to these highly porous structures, the mechanical stability of these materials is low. In the context of this work, nanocomposites were supposed to be developed which have both low thermal conductivity and improved mechanical properties. The stability of the materials was to be generated by the use of polymer matrices. In order to reduce their thermal conductivity, as many interfaces as possible were to be generated within the material. For this purpose, a mixture of three different types of nanoparticles was integrated into different thermoplastic polymers by solution blending. It was found that, due to the different properties of the hydrophilic filler and the hydrophobic matrix, strong agglomerates within the composites were built. These agglomerates represent thermal bridges and predetermined breaking points, which negatively affect the properties of the materials in terms of stability and thermal conductivity. In order to avoid the formation of agglomerates, the surface properties of the fillers were chemically modified so, that they were hydrophobic, and carried polymerizable groups. Furthermore, a two-step process was developed, which allows the modified nanoparticles to be prepared without agglomeration for emulsion polymerization. The composites showed a slightly reduced thermal conductivity and, concurrently, an improvement in mechanical stability compared to the pure polymer. Since the thermal conductivity was only slightly reduced, some porosity had to be introduced into the composites. To maintain the enhanced mechanical properties, this porosity was generated by the integration of hollow modified nanoparticles. These particles were connected by various methods with the polystyrene matrix. The most promising approach was the production by mass polymerization of styrene. The thermal conductivity of the produced materials could be reduced to values below 0.100 [W/(m∙K)]. Furthermore, various tests were carried out to determine the mechanical stability of these composites. It became apparent that the compressive strength, the hardness (according to Vickers), the E-modulus and the fracture toughness could be increased in comparison to pure polystyrene. These values are significantly higher than the corresponding characteristic values of the foam insulation materials.
