Estructura de las praderas del pasto marino Phyllospadix torreyi y sus macroalgas asociadas, en función de las horas de exposición al aire, en dos sitios del intermareal rocoso de Baja California | Structure of the seagrass meadows of Phyllospadix torreyi and its associated macroalge in terms of hours of exposure to air, in two sites of the rocky intertidal of Baja California

La zona intermareal rocosa se caracteriza por presentar cambios a pequeña escala en la temperatura, luz, humedad, salinidad y condiciones hidrodinámicas, principalmente. La distribución de los organismos está determinada por el grado de exposición al oleaje, el tipo de substrato y la exposición a la marea. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue determinar las variaciones estacionales del efecto de las horas de exposición al aire, sobre la estructura del pasto marino Phyllospadix torreyi y sus macroalgas asociadas. La hipótesis fue que P. torreyi presentaría valores reducidos de biomasa foliar y subterránea, densidad de haces e índice de área foliar en las zonas con mayor exposición al aire. Las macroalgas también presentarían biomasas reducidas a mayor tiempo de exposición. Se compararon dos sitios con diferente pendiente topográfica: El Sauzal de Rodríguez, con pendiente más pronunciada, y Raul's, con una pendiente más suave. De octubre de 2009 a abril de 2010, se colectaron muestras a lo largo de tres transectos por sitio, mismas que fueron separadas en intermareal superior, con ≥ 100 horas de exposición al año, e intermareal inferior con ≤100 horas de exposición. Los resultados mostraron que, en El Sauzal, los valores más elevados en biomasa de P. torreyi correspondieron al intermareal superior, a pesar de que este nivel fue el que tuvo más horas de exposición al aire, con un valor promedio cercano a las 200 horas durante el periodo de estudio. En Raul´s, las mayores biomasas se encontraron en el intermareal inferior, con apenas un promedio de 3 horas de exposición al aire. En ningún sitio, estrato, o mes, se pudo establecer una correlación clara entre la estructura de las praderas de P. torreyi, y las horas de exposición al aire. Las macroalgas, tuvieron valores más altos de riqueza y diversidad de especies en Raul´s. El grupo de las algas cafés tuvo una contribución significativa en la biomasa medida. No se encontraron diferencias estadísticas en la biomasa de las macroalgas entre estratos, o entre meses.

The rocky intertidal zone is characterized by its small-scale changes, mainly in temperature, light, humidity, salinity, and hydrodynamic conditions. Organisms’ distribution is determined by the degree of wave shock, the type of bottom, and the tidal exposure. The objective of this study was to determine the seasonal fluctuations in the effect of the hours of air exposure, in the structure of the seagrass Phyllospadix torreyi, and its associated macroalgae. The hypothesis was that P. torreyi would present reduced values of above and belowground biomass shoots density, and leaf area index in the zones with greater air exposure. Macroalgae would also present reduced biomass values in the more exposed zones. Two sites with different topographic slope were compared: El Sauzal de Rodríguez, with a steep slope, and Raul’s with a less pronounced slope. From October 2009 to April 2010, samples were collected along three transects per site, and separated into: higher intertidal, with ≥ 100 exposure hours per year, and lower intertidal, with ≤100 exposure hours. Results showed that at El Sauzal, the highest P. torreyi biomass values corresponded to the higher intertidal, despite the fact that this level had the highest number of hours of air exposure, with an average value close to 200 hours during the study period. At Raul’s the highest biomass values were found at the lower intertidal, with an average value of barely 3 hours of air exposure. In no site, strata, or month, a clear correlation between P. torreyi’s bed structure and exposure hours could be established. Macroalgae had higher values of richness and species diversity at Raul’s. The group of brown algae had a significant contribution to the measured biomass. No significant differences in macroalgae biomass were found, either between strata, or months.
