The management and control of New Zealand's freshwater fisheries : A dissertation presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the Post-graduate Diploma in Parks, Recreation and Tourism at Lincoln University
1992
Butler, Richard Stanley
This project briefly traces fisheries management in New Zealand through to the present system of management. This project begins with a brief description of the fish species present in New Zealand. The system of fisheries management and ownership employed in pre-European Maori society is described. The response of the European colonists to the New Zealand environment is traced through to the motivation behind the forming of the acclimatisation societies in the Nineteenth Century. The legislation used to protect the introduced fish and other historical government involvement in freshwater fisheries management implications is traced. The Treaty of Waitangi and the implications this treaty has over ownership of the freshwater fisheries resource are discussed.
