Afficher plus [+] Moins [-]Negotiations on water use within the context of free trade agreements are chiefly concentrated in the areas of trade in commodities, services and investments, agriculture, and intellectual property. Multiple sectors overlap according to consumptive and non-consumptive water usages. This paper is a summary of a study of the same title, carried out within the framework of the Project “Visión Social del Agua” (Social Vision of Water) led by Agua Sustentable. Rather than emphasizing liberalisation, the paper advocates for deepening trade commitments towards increased benefits, while limiting damages through the establishment of regulations to protect public interest and to lessen negative impacts on domestic economies.
