Current Brazilian legislation is not sufficient to inform consumers about the content of trans fats in packaged foods. The study investigates the presence of trans fat information in labeling, and the actual use of trans fat in packaged food and beverages marketed in Brazil. Of 11,434 products analyzed, 81.3% omitted listing trans fat sources in food ingredients. The adverse effects of trans fat consumption are well documented (outside of packaging), but industrially produced trans fats are still used in many food products. Along with measures to restrict their use, improvements in nutritional labeling are needed.
