Handbook: Designing a Solar-Powered Soilless Irrigation System for Net Houses
2023
Nejatian, Arash
A net house with root zone cooling and a hydroponics system, all powered by solar energy, offers a sustainable solution for agriculture in arid regions. This innovative approach combines the benefits of controlled environment agriculture with renewable energy to optimize plant growth and water use efficiency. The net house provides a protective barrier against pests and harsh environmental conditions, such as strong winds and excessive solar radiation, which are common in desert climates. Inside the net house, the root zone cooling system maintains optimal root temperatures, enhancing nutrient uptake and plant health. This is particularly effective in preventing heat stress in crops during extreme temperatures. The hydroponics system circulates nutrient-rich water directly to the plant roots, significantly reducing water consumption compared to traditional soil-based cultivation. By powering these systems with solar energy, the setup ensures a low carbon footprint while maintaining high productivity, making it an ideal model for sustainable agricultural practices in challenging environments.
