Analysis of Antibody Response in Atlantic Salmon and Atlantic Cod

The adaptive immune system in teleost fish, such as Atlantic cod and salmon, shares similarities with other vertebrates in its use of immunoglobulins (Igs) and T-cell receptors (TCRs) for antigen recognition, and major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules for antigen presentation. Teleost B cells produce antibodies in response to both T-dependent and T-independent antigens, but their role in antigen presentation is less understood. Some species, like the Atlantic cod, lack MHC II molecules. This genetic absence impairs CD4+ T cell function and leads to significant immunocompromise in mammals. However, this is not the case in Atlantic cod. This study investigates the T-dependent and T-independent antibody responses in Atlantic salmon and explores the B-cell receptor (BCR) responses in Atlantic cod following immunization with the T-independent antigen NP-Ficoll to better understand the immune strategies in these fish.
