In Germany, the demand for pears currently cannot be met from domestic production. The main pear cultivars on the market –‘Alexander Lucas’, ‘Conference’, ‘Williams Christ’ (‘Bartlett’) – and most other market cultivars are highly susceptible to fire blight, caused by the bacterium Erwinia amylovora, a disease that can lead to the loss of entire pear orchards. Growing resistant varieties and close and regular monitoring of pear orchards and host plants in the vicinity are the best methods of controlling this disease. We report on the construction of a dense genetic map for the pear cultivar ‘Harrow Sweet'.
