Comparison of the genomes of 15 avian herpesvirus isolates by restriction endonuclease analysis

anglais. Differentiation of herpesvirus isolates has been performed mostly on the basis of biological properties and serology. In this study, 15 herpesvirus isolates from different species of birds were compared by restriction endonuclease analysis of genomic DNA. All herpesviruses were isolated in Europe or are used as vaccine viruses there. The isolates could be differentiated into seven groups based on restriction patterns. The largest group contains isolates from passeriform and psittacine birds and could further be subdivided into four subgroups. Two other groups are represented by herpesvirus isolates of quail and crane, and by isolates of pigeon and owl. Duck plague virus, herpesvirus of turkey, infectious laryngotracheitis virus and a herpesvirus isolate from tragopan all exhibited distinct restriction patterns. In general, our results parallel earlier cross‐neutralization studies and yield additional, more detailed information on the relationship between different herpesvirus isolates of birds.

français. La différenciation des isolats d'herpesvirus a été réalisée principalement à partir des propriétés biologiques et de la sérologie. Dans cette étude, 15 isolats d'herpesvirus provenant de différentes espèces d'oiseaux ont été comparés par l'analyse des profils de restriction de l'ADN du génome. Tous les herpesvirus ont été isolés en Europe ou y ont été utilisés comme vaccin. Les isolats ont pu être différenciés en 7 groupes sur la base des profils de restriction. Le groupe le plus important comprend des isolats provenant de passériformes et de psittacidés, et a été ensuite subdivisé en quatre sous‐groupes. Deux autres groupes renferment des isolats d'herpesvirus de caille et de grue ainsi que de pigeon et de hibou. Le virus de la peste du canard, l'herpesvirus de la dinde, le virus de la laryngotrachéite infectieuse et un isolat d'herpesvirus de faisan d'Asie montrent tous des profils de restriction différents. En général, les résultats obtenus concordent avec les études antérieures de séroneutralisations croisées et en plus apportent des informations détaillées sur les relations entre les isolats d'herpesvirus des oiseaux.

allemand. Die Differenzierung von Herpesvirusisolaten erfolgte bisher meist an Hand von biologischen Eigenschaften und serologisch. In der vorliegenden Studie wurden 15 Herpesvirusisolate aus verschiedenen Vogelarten mittels Restriktionsenzym‐Analyse ihrer Genom‐DNS verglichen. Alle Herpesviren stammen aus Europa oder werden dort als Vakzineviren verwendet. Die Isolate konnten an Hand ihrer Restriktionsmuster in sieben Gruppen differenziert werden. Die größte Gruppe enthielt Isolate von passeriformen Vögeln und Psittaziden und ließ sich in vier Untergruppen unterteilen. Zwei andere Gruppen wurden von den Isolaten aus Wachtel und Kranich und von den Isolaten aus Taube und Eule gebildet. Das Entenpestvirus, Puten‐herpesvirus, Laryngotracheitisvirus und ein Herpesvirusisolat aus einem Tragopan hatten alle völlig unterschiedliche Restriktionsmuster. Im Allgemeinen entsprachen diese Ergebnisse denen früherer Kreuzneutralisationen und lieferten zusätzliche, genauere Informationen über die Beziehung zwischen vershiedenen Herpesvirusisolaten aus Vögeln.
