Bovine Virus Diarrhea (BVD) occurs endemically in cattle in Germany, primarily caused by BVD Type 1 viruses. Since 2004, BVD is a notifiable animal disease in the country. In 2011, a national BVD control program started to reduce the number of persistently infected animals (PI). Since then, more than 19 million animals were tested, registered in the German cattle database (HI-Tier) and assigned a BVD status. More than 56,000 animals were classified as PI and removed from the population.
