allemand. For the development of high-rate anaerobic fluidized bed reactor systems with low energy input, three different reactor types were operated and tested in a long-time experiment using special porous polyurethane (PUR) carriers, whose density and settling velocity can be changed by the manufacturer. One reactor was operated with effluent recirculation and the other two with biogas-induced fluidization. All reactors were fed with a synthetic wastewater (5000- 22000 mg COD/l) and with potato fruit water from a starch factory (20000 mg COD/l). The results show, that the PUR carriers enable high COD removal efficiencies in all investigated fluidized bed systems. The best removal efficiency and the highest loading capacity can be achieved in the liquid induced reactor system.
