Mount Banahaw-San Cristobal Protected Landscape (MBSCPL) [Philippines] consists of adjoining mountains that, aside from serving as watersheds, offer numerous environmental and economic benefits in the provinces of Laguna, Quezon, and Batangas. Barangay Kinabuhayan, in Dolores, Quezon is located within the MBSCPL and attracts local and foreign tourists as well as religious pilgrims who consider the place sacred in their faith and to commune with nature. Additionally, the general public views this as a location for forest recreational activities. This study assessed the practicality of establishing a forest bathing site in the MBSCPL, particularly in Brgy. Kinabuhayan that can cater to the needs of the general public to enjoy the serenity and soothing atmosphere in the area. The activity to be offered is adopted from the Japanese concept of shinrin yoku which translates as 'forest bathing' which is slowly gaining popularity in the Philippines. Forest bathing involves a visit to a forest field for relaxation and recreation by breathing in volatile substances, called phytoncides (wood essential oils), which are antimicrobial volatile organic compounds derived from plants (trees), such as alpha-pinene and limonene. Currently, Baguio City and Rizal province offer forest bathing activities in the Philippines. The result of the assessment conformed with the ecological standard set forth for a forest bathing area. Also, selected respondents from the different agencies were asked to describe their understanding and experiences about Mount Banahaw and whether the implementation of forest bathing is feasible and socially acceptable. Findings revealed that almost all of the biological and physical features as well as operational aspect of the proposed site is conducive to support this activity. Furthermore, the study revealed that forest bathing activities can be initiated because the site has an established institutional recognition, as well as existing facilities and flexible management operations.
