Late Quaternary developments of Mediterranean oaks in the Atlantic domain of the Iberian Peninsula: The case of the Cantabrian region (N Spain)

"Se presenta una síntesis de la presencia de la encina (tipo Quercus ilex) en la región Cantábrica (norte de España) a partir de análisis integrados de carbón y polen. El carbón arqueológico procede en gran parte de yacimientos a lo largo de los territorios litorales y prelitorales del País Vasco, Cantabria y Asturias, datados entre 45 y 3,7 mil cal BP, y culturalmente abarcan desde el Musteriense hasta la Edad del Hierro. La información sobre polen se produce a partir de unos pocos yacimientos arqueológicos, pero principalmente de turberas y sedimentos lacustres. El tipo Q ilex se observa ya en 45-30 mil cal BP, con apariciones esporádicas en contextos de vegetación dominados por el tipo Pinus sylvestris, que fue ampliamente explotado por habitantes del Musteriense y Auriñaciense. Posteriormente, durante el Paleolítico Superior, hay un declive importante, y el tipo Q ilex apenas está presente entre 29 y 15 mil cal BP, con ambientes abiertos dominados por arbustos de brezal. A partir del Magdaleniense superior, Q. ilex se expandió nuevamente, manteniéndose en el paisaje de la región cantábrica durante todo el Holoceno, aunque subordinado en los bosques de robles caducifolios bajo la influencia del clima oceánico. Q. flex tuvo una posición más favorable que Quercus caducifolio en toda la vertiente cantábrica, sur y noroeste de la adyacente Cordillera Ibérica, donde las influencias oceánicas se han atenuado por la sequía estival y la continentalidad. A synthesis of the occurrence of the evergreen oak (Quercus ilex type) in the Cantabrian region (northern Spain) is presented on the basis of integrated charcoal and pollen analyses. Archaeological charcoal comes largely from sites along the littoral and pre-littoral territories of the Basque Country, Cantabria and Asturias dated from 45 to 3.7 Kyr cal BP, and culturally ranging from Mousterian to Iron Age. Pollen information is produced from a few archaeological sites but mainly from peats and lake sediments. Q ilex-type is observed as early as at 45-30 Kyr cal BP, with sporadic occurrences in vegetation contexts dominated by Pinus sylvestris-type, which was widely exploited by Mousterian and Aurignacian inhabitants. Afterwards, during the Upper Palaeolithic, there is an important decline, and Q ilex-type is hardly present between 29 and 15 Kyr cal BP, with open environments dominated by heathland shrubs. From Late Magdalenian onwards, Q. ilex-type expanded again, emaining in the landscape of the Cantabrian region throughout the Holocene, although subordinated in deciduous oak forests under the influence of oceanic climate conditions. Q. flex-type had a more favourable position than deciduous Quercus across the Cantabrian, southern slopes and northwest of the adjacent Iberian Cordillera, where oceanic influences have become attenuated by summer drought and continentality"
