4 Eps 4 Cadmium Talk Managing cadmium levels in cocoa at the pre-harvest phase
2024
The fourth Cadmium Talk webinar focused on strategies to manage and reduce cadmium levels in cocoa across the pre- and post-harvest stages. Dr. Gideon Ramtahal addressed cadmium uptake in cocoa during cultivation, emphasizing soil factors (acidity, organic matter, and nutrient content) and plant genetics. He presented mitigation techniques like liming, organic amendments (e.g., biochar, spent grain), and competitive nutrient enrichment (zinc, manganese). Dr. Frank Intriago explored post-harvest solutions, highlighting the fermentation process and how microbial blends combined with fruit extracts (banana and apple) can significantly reduce cadmium levels. His studies showed up to 61% cadmium reduction using EM1 with fruit extracts. Both presenters stressed the importance of testing, cost considerations, and locally adapted practices. The session emphasized an evidence-based, long-term approach to help cocoa farmers in Latin America and the Caribbean comply with European safety standards and ensure sustainable market access.
