Evaluation of groundwater quality close to a sanitary landfill | Evaluación de la calidad del agua subterránea cercana a un relleno sanitario

Sanitary landfills have become a source of surface and groundwater contamination, and this is due to the generation of leachates that can reach water bodies with adverse effects on the environment. The municipality of Medellin, Veracruz; It has a sanitary landfill whose level of operation has recently increased due to the closure of the Veracruz sanitary landfill. The objective of this study was to analyze the quality of the groundwater surrounding the sanitary landfill. pH, electrical conductivity (EC), turbidity (T), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Phosphorus (PT), Nitrates (NO3), Total Dissolved Solids (SDT) and heavy metals (Pb, Cd and Cu) were evaluated in 7 wells close to the landfill during the northern and dry seasons. The physicochemical results were within the Mexican regulations; Turbidity values exceeded international standards and 57% of the wells were found to be contaminated according to COD levels. The concentrations of Pb and Cd in both seasons were outside the maximum permissible limits for consumption both in national and international regulations. The results indicated the influence of the sanitary landfill on the groundwater quality.

Los rellenos sanitarios se han vuelto una fuente de contaminación de aguas superficiales y subterráneas, y esto se debe a la generación de lixiviados que pueden llegar hasta los cuerpos de agua con efectos adversos al ambiente. El municipio de Medellín, Veracruz; cuenta con un relleno sanitario cuyo nivel de operación se ha incrementado recientemente debido a la clausura del relleno sanitario de Veracruz. El objetivo del presente estudio fue analizar la calidad del agua subterránea aledaña al relleno sanitario. Se evaluaron pH, conductividad eléctrica (CE), turbidez (T), Demanda Química de Oxigeno (DQO), Fósforo Total (PT), Nitratos, (NO3), Sólidos Disueltos Totales (SDT) y metales pesados (Pb, Cd y Cu) en 7 pozos próximos al relleno durante temporada de nortes y estiaje. Los resultados fisicoquímicos se encontraron dentro de la normatividad mexicana; los valores de turbidez superaron la normatividad internacional y el 57% de los pozos mostraron estar contaminados de acuerdo a los niveles de DQO. Las concentraciones de Pb y Cd en ambas temporadas se encontraron fuera de los límites máximos permisibles para consumo en normatividad nacional e internacional. Los resultados indicaron la influencia del relleno sanitario en la calidad del agua subterránea.
