Capacity Building in Risk Management and Communication for the Prevention, Control, and Eradication of New World Screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax–NWS) in Central America

This project aims to strengthen risk management and communication for the prevention, control, and eradication of the New World Screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax) in Central America. Following recent outbreaks in Panama, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua, an Inter-Agency Group was formed, including IICA, USDA-APHIS, and OIRSA, to train technicians, farmers, and vulnerable communities. The initiative includes informational materials, campaigns on social media and traditional media, and biosecurity strategies to prevent the spread of the pest. Governments have declared sanitary emergencies to reinforce control measures. The project follows the One Health approach, promoting collaboration across sectors to protect human, animal, and environmental health.
Afficher plus [+] Moins [-]Este proyecto busca fortalecer la gestión de riesgos y la comunicación para la prevención, control y erradicación del gusano barrenador del Nuevo Mundo (Cochliomyia hominivorax) en Centroamérica. Ante los recientes brotes en Panamá, Costa Rica y Nicaragua, se ha creado un Grupo Interagencial conformado por IICA, USDA-APHIS y OIRSA, con el objetivo de capacitar a técnicos, productores y comunidades vulnerables. Se desarrollan materiales informativos, campañas en redes sociales y medios tradicionales, y estrategias de bioseguridad para evitar la propagación de la plaga. Además, los gobiernos han declarado emergencias sanitarias para reforzar las medidas de control. La iniciativa sigue el enfoque de Una Salud, promoviendo la colaboración entre sectores para proteger la salud humana, animal y ambiental.
