Drought is one of the most critical environmental stress factors limiting agricultural production. Determining species resistant to drought conditions is of great importance for breeding studies. Investigation of the drought response of the hophornbeam, which naturally distributes in Turkey, could contribute to the success of afforestation programs. In these sense the study, it was aimed to analyze hop-hornbeam seedlings taken from seven different populations' morphological, physiological and biochemical responses to drought stress. The study was carried out in three different irrigation levels (irrigated twice a week, once a week, and once every two weeks) depending on a randomized plot design. Plants that were harvested in June, July, August, September, and October seedlings' height, diameter, total biomass, water potential, stomatal conductivity, proline, and total soluble sugar content were measured. The lowest height growth was determined from the Adana-Saimbeyli and AntalyaFinike populations. The results determined the highest plant water tension, amounts of soluble sugar, and proline in the group that was irrigated every two weeks. In the chlorophyll concentration index measurements in August, Adana-Saimbeyli, Antalya-Akseki, Antalya-Finike populations had lower values were measured. It was determined that the population with the lowest stomatal conductivity was Antalya-Akseki and the group that was irrigated every two weeks. In conclusion Adana-Saimbeyli, Antalya-Akseki, Antalya-Finike populations were more resilient to drought, so they should be preferred for future afforestation programs.
