Increasing the crop productivity of abaca by S and T [Science and Technology] interventions on highly-yielding and bunchy top-resistant hybrids

To solve the major problems of the abaca industry in the Philippines, this study evaluated the potential of abaca hybrids with high yield and virus resistance. The performance of BANDALA and check varieties, Tinawagang Pula and Inosa, in nine sites was assessed using eight agronomic characteristics. The overall pseudostem fresh weight, pseudostem length, girth size, and number of leaf sheaths of BANDALA were significantly different from those of Tinawagang Pula. Moreover, BANDALA had comparable tensile strength with that of Tinawagang Pula across all locations. Tinawagang Pula and Inosa showed susceptibility to virus diseases, especially ABTV [Abaca bunchy top virus], while BANDALA showed resistance to these diseases. In addition, BANDALA had better growth performance than the check varieties regardless of fertigation or fertilizer recommendation rate applied in all locations.
