Estudio de los hábitos tróficos del delfín común (Delphinus delphis) a partir de ejemplares obtenidos en un varamiento masivo en el Golfo San Matías

El delfín común (Delphinus delphis) es el cetáceo pequeño más abundante del Golfo San Matías y su posición de depredador tope le otorga un rol clave como regulador de la estructura del ecosistema y sus relaciones tróficas. Un varamiento ocurrido en el mencionado golfo durante el mes de septiembre de 2021 permitió actualizar los conocimientos sobre la dieta y los hábitos alimenticios del delfín común, a partir de la identificación y descripción de la composición de especies presa encontradas en 38 estómagos recuperados. Se calcularon diferentes índices descriptivos para evaluar la importancia relativa de las presas en la dieta y estimar la relación entre el tamaño, madurez y sexo de los delfines y el tamaño e identidad de sus presas. Luego, se comparó la dieta actual del delfín común con aquella estimada para el periodo 1999-2009 por Romero et al. (2012). En este estudio se describe por primera vez la dieta de individuos de esta especie varados de manera simultánea en Argentina. El análisis de los datos obtenidos muestra una dieta dominada por presas pelágicas formadoras de cardúmenes, con Merluccius hubbsi y Engraulis anchoíta como presas principales, similar a la reportada en otras regiones costeras del mundo. Se detalló la relación entre las clases de madurez y sexo, y la dieta de la población estudiada, mostrando estrategias diferenciales entre los grupos mencionados: los animales machos y maduros prefirieron a la merluza en su dieta, mientras que hembras e inmaduros a la anchoíta. Además, se observaron diferencias significativas entre la dieta descrita por Romero et al. (2012) y el presente estudio, lo que sugiere que los delfines comunes reflejan los cambios ocurridos en el ecosistema del Golfo San Matías reportados por diversos autores, por lo que podrían considerarse indicadores ambientales.

The short beaked common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) is the most abundant small cetacean in the San Matías Gulf, and its position as apex predator gives it a key role as a regulator of ecosystem structure and trophic relationships. A mass stranding event occurred in the beforementioned gulf during September 2021 allowed us to update our knowledge on the diet and feeding habits of the common dolphin, based on the identification and description of the prey species composition found in 38 recovered stomachs. Different descriptive indices were calculated to evaluate the relative importance of prey in the diet and estimate the relationship between the size, maturity, and sex of the dolphins and the size and identity of the consumed prey. The current estimated diet of the common dolphin was then compared with that estimated for the period 1999-2009 by Romero et al. (2012). This study describes for the first time the diet of individuals of this species stranded simultaneously in Argentina. Analysis of the data reveals a diet dominated by schooling pelagic prey, with Merluccius hubbsi and Engraulis anchoíta as the main prey, similar to that reported in other coastal regions of the world. The relationship between maturity and sex classes and the diet of the studied population was detailed, revealing differential strategies among the groups: male and mature animals preferred hake in their diet, while females and immature animals chose anchovy. Furthermore, significant differences were observed between the diet described by Romero et al. (2012) and the present study, suggesting that common dolphins reflect the changes occurred in the San Matías Gulf, previously reported by various authors and could therefore be considered environmental indicators.
