Influence of fertilization and irrigation on the development, nutrition and efficiency of the oil palm on the Zone of Quevedo | Influencia de la fertilización y el riego sobre el desarrollo, nutrición y rendimiento de la palma de aceite en la Zona de Quevedo

The oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq), is a humid tropic plant, grown in many places of Latin America. In Ecuador it is grown since the mid 60's as an alternative source of vegetable oils. Up to date there are approximately 91.000 hectares cultivated in oil palm, distributed along the subtropical and Amazonian regions. These regions nave an adequate infrastructure for product transportation and commercialization. In the Quevedo zone, the oil palm crops started in 1985, with the tendency to replace the short cycle crops such as corn, soy, and rice, usual crops of this zone. This is how approximately 17.000 hectares have been cultivated with this kind of crop. This surface covers 19% of the total palm cultivated in the country. The Zone of Quevedo presents a humidity regime strongly ustic in comparison to the udic regime, recommended for the oil palm crop. The udic regime zones have greater water availability, for their greater annual rainfall rate. The area of Quevedo, with a potential humidity deficit, presents however soils with a high capacity of humidity storage, which are more fertile. Considering this circumstances, the crop is expected to perform better than those cultivated in other regions of Ecuador. The knowledge of the influence of the irrigation over palm production and efficiency is, undoubtedly, of great importance in zones with insufficient humidity. The oil palm that grows under the circumstances of Quevedo region suffers an accentuated hydric stress, because it bears 8 months with no rain. This situation affects the growth, nutrition, and production of the crop. If this factor is not managed adequately high efficiency can hardly be obtained. On the other hand, it is necessary to evaluate different fertilization alternatives to put them into practice at the time of definite transplant to the field and to maintain them for many years. This evaluation, will allow to know the answer of the crop to the fertilizer, and will also be a great opportunity to observe, in the long run, the development of the nutritional disorder known as "yellowness" which, among other causes, is attributed to a nutritional imbalance. Under these circumstances, a field study was carried out to evaluate the interaction of the complementary irrigation and fertilization on the efficiency as well as other characteristics of the oil palm cultivated in the Zone of Quevedo.

La palma de aceite (Elaeis guineensis Jacq), es una planta del trópico húmedo cultivada en muchos sitios en América Latina. En Ecuador se cultiva desde mediados de la década de los años 60, como una alternativa para producir aceites vegetales. Actualmente existen aproximadamente 91.000 hectáreas, distribuidas principalmente en las áreas del subtrópico y Amazonia que poseen vías e infraestructura adecuada para el transporte y comercialización del producto. En la zona de Quevedo, a partir de 1985, se inician las siembras de palma de aceite que tienden a desplazar los cultivos de ciclo corto como maíz, soya y arroz, usuales en la zona. Es así como se han logrado establecer alrededor de 17.000 hectáreas con este cultivo. Esta superficie constituye el 19% del área total de palma en el país. La zona de Quevedo presenta un régimen de humedad marcadamente "ústico" en comparación con el régimen "údico" que se considera adecuado para el cultivo de palma aceitera. Las zonas de régimen údico tienen mayor disponibilidad de agua, por su mayor precipitación anual. El área de Quevedo, con un potencial déficit de humedad, dispone sin embargo de suelos con alta capacidad para almacenar agua y son más fértiles. Considerando estas circunstancias se espera que el cultivo tenga un mejor comportamiento en esta zona, en relación con otras zonas donde se cultiva palma en el Ecuador. Conocer la influencia del riego sobre la producción y rentabilidad de la palma es, sin lugar a dudas, de gran importancia en zonas con humedad insuficiente. La palma que crece bajo las condiciones de Quevedo sufre un acentuado estrés hídrico, pues soporta ocho meses sin lluvia. Esta situación afecta el crecimiento, nutrición y producción del cultivo y si no se maneja adecuadamente este factor difícilmente se lograrán altos rendimientos. Por otro lado, es necesario evaluar varias alternativas de fertilización que se inicien al trasplante a sitio definitivo en el campo y que se mantengan por varios años. Esta evaluación, además de permitir conocer la respuesta del cultivo al abonamiento, será una magnífica oportunidad para observar a largo plazo el desarrollo del trastorno nutricional conocido como "amarillamiento" que, entre otras causas, se atribuye a un desbalance nutricional. Bajo estas condiciones se inició un estudio de campo para evaluar la interacción de la fertilización y el riego complementario en el rendimiento y otras características de la palma de aceite cultivada en la zona de Quevedo.
