Structure of the vascular epiphyte community on the arboreal collections from The Botanical Garden of Pinar del Río, Cuba | Estructura de la comunidad de epífitas vasculares en colecciones arbóreas del Jardín Botánico de Pinar del Río, Cuba

The forest landscape that is represented by the arboreal collections from the Botanical Garden of Pinar del Rio shows an abundant occupation of vascular epiphytes, on which there are no studies to date. The objective of the work was to determine the structure of the vascular epiphyte’s community associated to the tree species of the Botanical Garden, for which 16 plots of 300 m2 each were established (four for each collection area: Forest species, Fruit species, Slate/Serpentine area, and Archaic Forest). The host trees were identified with their diameters > D1.30), the total height, stem and crown were measured. Epiphytes were counted by Johansson zones. The data was processed, making cluster analysis, comparisons between areas and correlations between richness and abundance by phorophytic zones. Results: richness of 31 species of host trees and seven of vascular epiphytes; the abundances of Tillandsia flexuosa and T. utriculata represent 74% of the total. A horizontal pattern of epiphytes association was identified where the structure of the vegetation better resembles the natural habitat, and a vertical pattern of preference towards the foliage. It is concluded that in the forest landscape that make up the four collections areas studied, the epiphytes present a structure that in the initial phase of its establishment is dominated by two pioneer species, requiring their monitoring to evaluate the epiphyte-phorophytic relationship dynamic.

El paisaje forestal que se representa por las colecciones arbóreas del Jardín Botánico de Pinar del Río muestra una abundante ocupación de epífitas vasculares, sobre las que no se habían hecho estudios hasta el presente. El trabajo tuvo como objetivo determinar la estructura de la comunidad de epífitas vasculares asociadas a las especies arbóreas del Jardín Botánico, para lo cual se establecieron 16 parcelas de 300 m2 cada una (cuatro por cada colección: Forestales, Frutales, Pizarras/Serpentinas y Bosque Arcaico). Se identificaron los hospederos, se midieron todos los que tienen sus diámetros > D1.30, altura total, de fuste y copa. Se contaron las epífitas por zonas Johansson. Los datos fueron procesados, haciendo análisis de clúster, comparaciones entre áreas y correlaciones entre riqueza y abundancia de especies por zonas forofíticas. Resultados: riqueza de 31 especies de hospederos y siete de epífitas vasculares; las abundancias de Tillandsia flexuosa y T. utriculata representan el 74% del total. Se identificó un patrón horizontal de asociación de epífitas donde la estructura de la vegetación asemeja mejor al hábitat natural, y uno vertical de preferencia hacia el follaje. Se concluye que en el paisaje forestal que conforman las cuatro áreas de colecciones estudiadas, las epífitas presentan una estructura que en la fase inicial de su establecimiento está dominada por dos especies pioneras, requiriéndose su monitoreo para evaluar la dinámica de la relación epífita-forofito.
