Biodiversity of Autochthonous Balkan Goat Breed in the Republic of North Macedonia

Тhe specific history of goat breeding in the country affects its overall develop ment. In the majority of the goats farms extensive breeding system is present. Most prevalent goat breed in the country is Domestic Balkan goat and it is the only indigenous goat genetic resource. Development and implementation of dif ferent national programs laid the foundation for organized characterization of the genome of the Domestic Balkan goat. Different types of research activities contribute to better understanding of the goat genome, primarily through the characterization of production traits and primary phenotype characterization of goat genetic resources. Within the national programs, breeding program has been prepared, a recognized organization of goat breeders has been regis tered, but also ex situ conservation of biological material has been established.
