The buffalo population in the world numbers over 204 million individuals. The number of buffaloes is constantly increasing and a global buffalo population growth of 2% per year has been observed in the previous 20 years. Buffalo mi lk occupies about 13% of world production, which puts it in second place just behind the production of cow’s milk. It contains a higher percentage of protein and milk fat compared to cow’s milk, which makes it suitable for processing and production of specialized dairy products with more favorable yields. Different from some countries in the region, buffaloes are still farmed extensively. The animals have low production and almost no selection. By applying selection and using modern biotechnical methods, it is possible to improve the producti on of buffalo. In many countries, great attention is paid to genomic selection and it is gaining importance in buffalo as well. Today, 19 candidate genes with 47 mutations are known to be associated with trait milk production traits and can be used for selection and production enhancement.
