Climate-regulatory ecosystem services of the forests of the Chernivtsi Region on the gradient of landscape conditions | Кліматорегулювальні екосистемні послуги лісів Чернівецької області на градієнті ландшафтних умов

anglais. This paper delves into the ecosystem services related to climatic regulation provided by forests across the landscape gradient in Chernivtsi Region, Ukraine. As a case study, we examined three strata (social-ecological systems) characterized by diverse natural conditions, land cover, and land use. The traditional stratum showcases village livelihoods in mountain areas where forestry predominates. The intermediate stratum illustrates transitional areas featuring a mix of forestry and agriculture. Lastly, the intensive stratum, situated in the lowlands of the region, represents landscapes marked by intensive agriculture, including orchards. Utilizing open remote sensing data from Global Forest Watch, this study estimates gross emissions, gross removals and net carbon fluxes between forests and the atmosphere for the period from 2001 to 2022. The investigation discloses a prevalence of removals over emission along the mentioned landscape gradient, with each stratum exhibiting distinct carbon exchange patterns. The study determines that the net carbon flux in mountainous spruce and mixed forests within the traditional stratum amounts to 426 ktCO₂e/year (6.3 t/ha). In foothill landscape forests of the intermediate stratum, the figure is 276 ktCO₂e/year (4.9 t/ha), while in flat broad-leaved forest stands of the intensive stratum, the net carbon exchange is 117 ktCO₂e/year (5.8 t/ha). Notably, the intensive stratum demonstrates a well-balanced carbon flux. Beyond forests, a positive carbon balance is observed in roadside tree lines and orchards characterized by canopy cover >30 percent and >5 m height. The study also uncovers the impact of pathological processes on spruce stands in the intermediate stratum, contributing to substantial carbon emission. Overall, these findings underscore the intricate interplay between landscape characteristics, forest health, and carbon flux. The research, reliant on open remote sensing data, underscores the potential for utilizing such datasets in regional-scale assessments of climatic regulation ecosystem services. The identified patterns and imbalances in carbon exchanges emphasize the need for sustainable forest management practices to enhance carbon sequestration and mitigate emissions. Future research should delve deeper into the specific mechanisms driving land-related carbon dynamics in different strata, guiding targeted interventions for effective climate change mitigation.

Проведено дослідження просторового розподілу потенціалу лісів Чернівецької області з надання кліматорегулювальних екосистемних послуг із використанням відкритих геоінформаційних даних Global Forest Watch. Індикатором обрано показники вуглецевого балансу за проміжок часу з 2001 по 2021 рр. Для ситуаційного аналізу виділено три контрастних локалітети, які відображають лісорослинні умови уздовж ландшафтного градієнту від середньогір'я до рівниної височини. З'ясовано, що баланс вуглецю в лісових екосистемах області характеризується переважанням асиміляції над емісією, однак показано істотні відмінності в ефективності асиміляції та динаміці вуглецевих потоків на градієнті ландшафтних умов. Встановлено, що чистий вуглецевий обмін у гірських шпилькових і мішаних лісах становить 426 тис. тонн CO₂-екв. за рік (6,3 т/га), у лісах ландшафтів передгір'я – 276 тис. тонн CO₂-екв. за рік (4,9 т/га); у рівнинних широколистяних деревних масивах – 117 тис. тонн CO₂-екв./рік (5,8 т/га). Сумарно за 20-річний термін гірські ліси в межах дослідженої території асимілювали в еквіваленті 14,76×106 т CO2, передгірські – 10,74×106 т, рівнинні – 2,9×106 т. Продемонстровано залежність трансформування газообміну в лісах різних стратумів від їхньої ресурсної стійкості, розмірів та конфігурації деревних масивів. Зокрема, знайдене співвідношення між процесами асиміляції та емісії свідчить про високу збалансованість вуглецевого циклу букових, дубових та дубово-грабових рівнинних лісів. Виявлено, що патологічні процеси в комплексі з кліматичними змінами призводять до масового всихання ялини, порушуючи вуглецевий цикл лісових екосистем передгірського геоекотону. Як наслідок, такі деревні масиви не тільки створюють передумови для прискореної мінералізації вуглецевмісних сполук, але й мають менший поглинальний потенціал, порівняно зі здоровими. Наголошено на необхідності ефективного управління лісовими ресурсами для забезпечення стабільності лісових екосистем та їх кліматорегулювальних функцій в умовах лісокористування та зростаючого впливу змін клімату. У перспективі на майбутнє визначено дослідження внеску придорожніх насаджень та садових комплексів у вуглецевий баланс регіону.
