Impact of the agroforestry system Kuxurr Rum on the sustainability of rural households livelihoods in Camotán and Jocotán, Guatemala

Nuestra investigación tiene como propósito comparar los sistemas de Producción agrícolas sin árboles combinado con cultivos en los linderos en relación con el Sistema Agroforestal Kuxur Rum SAK (mi tierra húmeda) el cual combina árboles en arreglos dispersos con los cultivos de maíz (Zea spp) y frijol (Phaseoluss spp.) y prácticas como la no quema, no roza, podas selectivas, cobertura permanente del suelo a través de la deposición de biomasa de los árboles y residuos de cosechas que mantienen la fertilidad y humedad de los suelos. Los resultados muestran que el asocio de árboles de usos múltiples, la no quema y el manejo sostenible de los cultivos de maíz y frijol aporta elementos que fortalecen la capacidad de respuesta de las familias en momentos de choques y crisis, por medio de la diversificación de los medios y estrategias de vida que satisfacen las necesidades de los hogares y contribuyen a disminuir la degradacion ambiental. Las familias que poseen el SAK obtienen del mismo la leña que consumen disminuyendo la presión sobre el bosque, contribuyendo a la economía familiar y a la equidad de género en los hogares ya que las mujeres y niños pueden dedicarse a otras actividades. Se determinó que ambos tipos de sistemas no generan ingresos brutos suficientes para el hogar por la venta directa de maíz y frijol, no obstante se encontró que el SAK es un agroecosistema cultivado que provee de ingresos y una serie de beneficios intangibles que contribuyen a la reducción de la vulnerabilidad social y ambiental. Our research aiMON to compare agricultural production systeMON without trees combined with crops in relation to the Agroforestry System named to as Kuxur Rum SAK (my damp earth) which combines arrangements of scattered trees with crops of maize (Zea spp) and beans (Phaseoluss spp.), and farming practices such as no burning, no slashing, selective pruning of trees, permanent soil cover through the deposition of tree biomass as mulch, and crop residues. The results show that the association of multipurpose trees, non-burning and sustainable management of maize and beans provides elements that strengthen the response capacity of families in times of climate shocks and crisis, through diversification of livelihoods strategies to meet the needs of households and help reduce environmental degradation including soil erosion. It was found that the preference for the SAK was important for supplying firewood for cooking and there was less dependence on the forest for firewood, and this resulted in savings from not purchasing firewood as well as an increased participation of women in other productive activities especially since they do not have to engage time in harvesting and transport firewood from distant areas. It was determined that both types of systeMON do not generate enough gross income to the household from the direct sale of corn and beans, however it was found that the SAK is a cultivated agroecosystem that provides income and a number of intangible benefits that contribute to the reduction of social and environmental vulnerability.
