Hunger and poverty have made the usefulness of food security a household concept that aids in fostering a holistic approach to food and nutrition issues. This study assessed the contributions of rural women’s livelihood activities to household food security in Kajuru Local Government Area (LGA) of Kaduna state. With the multistage sampling technique, six wards from the fourteen wards in Kajuru were randomly selected in the first sampling stage, after which two villages were randomly selected from each ward to give a total of twelve villages. Ten rural women were then randomly sampled from each village to give a total of one hundred and twenty (120) respondents. Using a structured questionnaire, the data collected were analyzed with descriptive statistics while inferential statistics were used to test the hypotheses. The mean age of the respondents was about 37 years. Most (55%) of the respondents engaged in farming while others were into fish farming (21.7%), tailoring (18.3%) and food vending (9.2%) as their means of livelihood. Chi-square (χ2) test revealed that marital status (χ2=7.527, p=.005), educational level (χ2=7.527, p=.006), and religion (χ2=2.779, p=.002) were significantly related to household food security status. Pearson Product Moment Correlation showed the constraints to food security status were the low level of education (r =.268, p =.003) and lack of social amenities (r =.190 P =.038) were significant to household food security. Low levels of education and lack of social amenities were identified as the constraints facing the respondents on livelihood activities. Most of the respondents were mildly food secure. The study recommends that community efforts should be put in place to provide adequate social amenities that will encourage rural women to be involved in livelihood activities that will enhance household food security and a better standard of living.
