2025
Ewuziem, O.A. | Ewuziem, J.E.
The study analyzed the gender situation among entrepreneurs in Abia State Nigeria to assist policymakers in making decisions for industrial growth and sustainable economic development of the State. A multi-stage and purposive sampling technique was used to select respondents for the study. From the three agricultural zones of Aba, Ohafia, and Umuahia, twenty (20) entrepreneurs were selected at random. Data were collected with a well-structured questionnaire. The results show that both males and females participate in entrepreneurial activities in the state but males constitute up to 68.33% while 31.67% are made up of females. One of the most significant factors influencing entrepreneurship in the state is youthfulness, as the majority of entrepreneurs, both male and female, are under 50 years old. The mean age of the male entrepreneurs was 34 years while that of the females was 31 years. However, the males were more educated than the females because a sizeable percentage (43.9%) had different levels of tertiary education while only 15.79% of the female respondents were educated above secondary school level. The survey also revealed that, despite men having more access to finance, entrepreneurs perceived that businesses in the study area thrive regardless of gender. Income generation among male and female entrepreneurs was not statistically significant in the state. The results call for policies aimed at increasing youth participation in entrepreneurship in the State. There is also a need to increase access to finance for female entrepreneurs in the state to enhance their resources to expand their businesses.
