The pod of Balanitis aegyptiaca is often consumed locally as a remedy for BPH with claim of efficacy, though without scientific validation. The aim of this research work is to study effects of extracts of Balanitis aegyptiaca on prostate smooth muscle contraction on rats’ prostate in vitro in the treatment of Benign prostatic hyperplasia. Increased smooth muscle tone in the prostate may lead to bladder outlet obstruction and subsequent lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). All the extracts of B. aegyptiaca, induced relaxation of the rat prostate smooth muscle which were pre-contracted with α-adrenoceptor agonist to varying extent. The extent of the smooth muscle relaxation increased in direct proportion with the increase in polarity of the extract. The most and next relaxation effects of 166.7% and 66.7% were obtained with the aqueous and methanol extracts respectively, while the least effect 16.7% is recorded with the Chloroform extract.
